Help for Dry Skin

One of my doodles suffers from seasonal alopecia, as a result through the fall and winter he loses hair in patches along his back, flanks, and over his hips. It grows back in the summer. In the areas where he loses the hair, his skin gets really dry. I give him EPO and Wild Salmon Oil supplements which usually help with his skin. This winter has been particularly dry and I have been away for two weeks so he hasn't had his oil supplements. As a result his skin in the bald areas is so dry and really flaky, it looks horrible. He doesn't appear to be particularly itchy, but I'm thinking it can't feel very nice. Now that I am back home I have restarted his extra oil, but wondered if there is anything topical I can use to moisturize his skin in the flaky areas. Thanks!!

Douxo is the best. Recommended by JD's dermatologist. I order from Entirely Pets.

I checked out the Entirely Pets website, got very excited because all the Duoxo products are on sale right now, but it is $25 shipping to Canada, before anything they decide to add at the border. Amazon.ca sell the same size bottle for $46! Time to do some research for other suppliers within Canada!

I did end up getting Douxo Calm shampoo from Entirely Pets, they worked out the best priced even with the shipping charges. I also got the emulsion spray. After one wash and being sprayed I can already see a huge improvement in his skin, and as a bonus the coat that he does have is lovely and soft!

I don't know what to do for the dry skin but do you give melatonin? I had a foster dog that had seasonal flank alopecia and it helped with his hair loss by giving the melatonin.

Melatonin can be helpful to induce hair growth in some dogs and is given daily for two or three months until complete hair growth occurs. Restarting melatonin yearly four to six weeks prior to anticipated onset of hair loss may prevent recurrence.

Thanks Ann, my vet and I have discussed melatonin. I had reservations because he is already on Fluoxetine for anxiety, and wasn't sure how they would react together, didn't want him to be 'dopey'!! Also, the vet mentioned that in anxious people, melatonin can actually make then jumpy, more anxious, or have nightmares. We figured, seeing as he already has anxiety issues it was better to just put up with the annual hair loss!!
