Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have been feeding Butters Canidae pure foundations puppy food for a number of weeks after Orijen puppy food didn't agree with her. But my mom told me that she just read a report stating that some Canidae food is made in Diamond factories. (I'm trying to find the report but not yet.) I am googling around and finding some indication that this is true including a recall notice on Canidae's Facebook page from 2012 for some of their food made in a Diamond plant. Of course, the Canidae website only shows their own dedicated factory in Texas. I'm just a sucker I guess.
Anyway, does anybody have any insight on this or know the current facts? I feel like if it's true then I must switch, right? So I'm gearing up for ANOTHER round of figuring out what food will work for her.
There is nowhere in my immediate area to buy high-quality food, but I will happily order from Chewy. I was wishing for the Acana puppy formula but apparently they don't carry that. I'm thinking maybe Fromm gold puppy?
I am so bummed right now. :(

I guess I should add, Butters is a 6-month-old goldendoodle. She weighs about 40 pounds right now. She has been doing very well on the Canidae stool-wise; the Orijen gave her diarrhea.
Me again, sorry -- here is the link to the report my mom read.
Not sure why it's on the Recommended Food list here, but I know Karen is much better versed in this and will give you a straight answer.
Winnie had trouble with loose poops on the Orijen Puppy, and did great on the Wellness Core Puppy. Fromm is another good one that we were considering, too. And, Acana is considered an "all life stages" food and can be fed to puppies as well.
I didn't realize that about Acana. Thanks so much for the tip!
Love Acana! You can't go wrong with it!
A few of the recommended brands on our list have contracted with Diamond to manufacture their foods over the years. However, they were not owned by Diamond, and set their own specifications. After the last round of recalls in 2012, most if not all of them stopped using Diamond's facilities. I will have to do some research, but in the meantime, you could call Canidae and ask where the food is made and if they are still using Diamond.
They do have their own manufacturing plant in TX. The question seems to be which of their foods is made there, and which are made elsewhere.
If you do switch, Erin, Fromm's Puppy Gold would not be a good choice, as you're feeding a grain-free formula, and Puppy Gold contains grains. You must look at ingredients and formulas, not just brands.
I would also not say that IF the food is still manufactured by Diamond, you must switch. If Butter is doing well on the food, I'd stay you're safe to stay with it until she's ready for adult food.
Thanks so much for your help. I am trying so hard to do the right thing and I have anxiety about not getting it right, you know? I appreciate all the information you share.
I will call Canidae today.
From what I've been reading on-line this a.m., customer service may avoid your question about whether the formula you're feeding is made by Diamond by saying that's "proprietary information". In my mind, that answer would be the same as saying that it is, lol. I think your best bet is to ask specifically where your formula is made, i.e. what area of the country.
I have to say, I feel misled. On their website they tout their own facility, blah blah blah, but here they are outsourcing some of it. I should have done better researching but I took it at face value.
I tried to call a couple of times but only got a voice mail in their CS department. So I emailed. No answer yet.
Ah ha, as soon as I typed that I got an email back from them! Here's what it says:
"Thank you for your support and for your inquiry. If you are in Virginia where your area code indicates it is most likely from our Ethos manufacturing facility. Ethos Pet Nutrition is our own advanced research and development center as well as our pet food manufacturing facility which serves as our flagship food and treat facility. We also have our recipes produced at several other facilities across the United States including Diamond Pet, Performance Pet, and Hampshire Pet. These facilities are all committed to achieving CANIDAE's extremely high standards for quality and safety. If you can send me the mfg. code from your bag I will be able to see where your bag is from. Thank you"
Of course my location is probably irrelevant since I ordered from chewy, so I emailed back to let her know that and also include the bag code. I thought it was a nice response from them and not evasive, so that's good!
