I've been on DK for a while now in prep for my new pooch and I always thought it was so interesting that this group was one of the most popular. HA!! Needless to say I've been home with pup for 2 days and I couldn't join this group fast enough!!!! I have an 8 year old boy and 4 year old little girl. Cooper hasn't been too too bad with my son, some nipping here and there..... But with my daughter we are having some trouble!!! I didn't think at 8 weeks dogs would attempt to "hump" but this is what is happening. The pup gets into a frenzy with her. Climbs on her and starts humping and nipping at her. He Is also always grabbing her clothes. I tell him no and redirect him to a toy but it's almost impossible to redirect because he's so hyper focused on what he's doing!!!!! Any suggestions?!? Could really use some!!!

Personally, I would keep them separated as much as possible for now using a baby corral or ex-pen.

I have two girls - 8 and 5.  Izzy would get really nipping with them the first couple of weeks.  What worked best for us is "low and slow."  I taught the girls to speak slowly and in a low (i.e. not excited) tone with her as to not feed into the frenzy.  We also had lots of toys to redirect her with.  It really worked!  Izzy is now 5 months and can still occasionally get mouthy in the evenings or when really fired up but responds better to my girls than my husband:)   My girls still use their low and slow voices for all commands.  It's kind of funny to hear them say "Izzy, droooooooop it."

Hi,

We have a 12 week old puppy who did this a lot with our 9 and 6 yr old. The best advive we got from a trainer was that whenever our puppy would mouth/nip the kids, the kids were to leave the dog immediately....she loses any play time with the kids when she nips and we do find that she is getting better but immediately once she nips, off the kids go....We only allow our puppy on the main floor so when she nips, my kids will go to the basement or up to their rooms...It has been working well. If you need more, just let me know...I am a couple of weeks ahead and already I am seeing some great improvements in our behavior which in turn is leading to better behavior of our puppy!! Good luck!!
