Entropion, anyone?

Hi. Dagny had surgery today - spay and then entropion repair on one eye.  I brought her home 6+ hours ago and she hasn't stopped crying since...not even for 30 seconds.  Now she sounds like she's hyperventilating and crying.  Anxiety maybe?

Anyway, I'm not concerned about the spay.  I've been through that part many times.  I've just never dealt with this entropion before.  She will have stitches in her eye for 14 days and I was told by the vet that she would have to wear her e-collar for 14 days!  WHAT?!  How is that even possible?  Is she really going to scratch at her eye?  I put that cone on and she begins freaking out and trying to pull it off. I'm worried that she'll end up getting it off in the middle of the night tonight (because I can't get it tight enough around her neck) and end of scratching her eye all to heck anyway.

I need some encouragement. Please!

So sorry to hear this! Our puppy was vERY sad when he was neutered and had to wear the collar. On top of that, he was really not able to go into his crate with the big cone on. We ended up getting an inflatable collar like the one below:

Not sure if this will stop your baby from reaching their eye, but for us..it was worth a try. They also have some ones that are not so hard as the E-collar/cones. Might be worth doing an internet search ... I think we got the inflatable one at Petsmart or Petco. Hope your puppy gets better soon!

I thought of a soft collar, too, but then I realized that it won't keep her from rubbing the eye, not only with her paw, but against furniture, carpeting, walls, etc. In this case, she really does need the hard plastic cone that sticks way out in front of the face.

Yeah.... that makes sense.

Poor baby. Do you sense that the crying is from pain? Maybe a pain releiver or sedative for the first while?  My first instict would be to lay with her and hold her to give her security; see if that settles her a bit.

Thank you so much everyone!  So far no scratching at the eye.  The first night was terrible.  Neither one of us slept much as she cried all night.  By the next morning, she was back to normal :)  So happy!  I was worried that I was going to have to take a trip to the ER though that first day.  Nancy had a great recommendation to check out Adina's page for entropion repair, so I will do that.  Again, your support has been tremendous!  THANK YOU for weighing in!
