Parastar Reaction?

Last night Wynnie was on my lap and I noticed a wound the size of two small peas just above her shoulder blades. Each one had a blood covered scab. We are staying in Florida for the month so a friend called her vet and I was able to get Wynnie an appointment today. The vet believed that the sores could have been a reaction to Parastar Plus, so she shaved and cleaned the spots. She also gave Wynnie a shot of Covenia. Is there anything that I need to know about this antibiotic? Are there any side effects? By the way, Wynnie has been on Parastar Plus for almost two years without any reaction.

The drug is called Convenia and it's used for bacterial skin infections. It really should not be used without confirmation that a bacterial infection is present. Did the vet do a culture?

Like most antibiotics, it has the potential to cause ongoing diarrhea, so you want to give a good probiotic. I recommend that you order Proviable if you don;t already have some on hand.

Is it possible something bit her?  It seems if she has been on Parastar Plus for two years without a reaction - that a reaction now would be unusual.

Yes, it is unusual. We return home to the frozen tundra of the NEast on March 2 when the risk of mosquitos and ticks is zero. I plan to apply Parastar Plus in mid March and see if she has a reaction. I am hoping that this latest event is a one off happening and that she will be OK. BTW, I applied Parastar Plus on Wynnie just before we left for Florida on January 28.

I hope these two sores heal quickly and she has no further issue.

Isn't that where most dogs are microchipped? It couldn't be from Wynnie's identification chip, could it?

Interesting point but she has lived with he micro chip for two years without a problem. The sores are in the area where I applied the Parastar.
