Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi there!

Has anyone heard of someone breeding an F1 goldendoodle back to a golden retriever? I spoke to a breeder a few hours away who just had a litter of these and they look so cute!

Wondering if anyone has a doodle like this? How are they?

So, it would be 3/4 Golden Retriever and 1/4 Poodle.  Sounds like a winner to me.

If you are looking for a doodle who is almost guaranteed to shed and who will look a lot like a Golden Retriever, that's what you will likely get with this mix. Since most people who want doodles want that shaggy "teddy bear" look and also would prefer low to no shedding, there are no reputable breeders producing this mix, which is called a "reverse F1B".

Here is our article on what to look for in a reputable breeder. These are the minimum standards you should require, regardless of what type of doodle you're considering: http://www.doodlekisses.com/notes/What_To_Look_for_In_a_Breeder

I found a web site that refers to this combination as a Comfort Retrievers.

I sought out an "F2: (goldendoodle to goldendoodle) to get a smooth coat.

Chuck, that site also refers to such well-known and popular breeds as "Labrashepherds", "Boradors", and "Beabulls", lol. Not exactly what I would call a reliable source.

Anybody can breed anything with anything and make up a name for it, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Hahahaha.... Missed that.  Sorry about that!

I know you are looking for a retriever look, Cari.  Have you thought of finding some reputable Golden Retriever breeders and asking if they ever end up with smaller goldens?  Perhaps that is the way for you to explore.

Josie is 3/4 retriever and 1/4 poodle. She looks like a small retriever but with finer features and she sheds. She is such a beautiful dog and very well mannered, easy to train.

Hi Cari,
I just want to share why I got a Golden Doodle for myself and my family after my poodle died.

My younger son has allergies, my older son likes the Golden Retriever temperament, and we all like the Classic Doodle look. We didn't research enough to realize Doodles have 3 different type of hair, but now I know why Doodle prices range from 800 - 2500. The best breeder don't even try breeding generations other than F1 or "F1b which I understand going back to Poodle, because less shed 75% poodle in it" often or at all because they cant predict how a puppy will look. They can figure out the statistical chance of a certain look, but they can't be certain of it.

I think we need to protect the original concept of the doodle and only the original F1 or F1b can do that. When people think of the Doodle that's what they think of. All others are a gamble. Wanting one look and not getting it can lead to a lot of unwanted dogs being abandoned. It seems like you really want to get the retriever look, so you might consider getting a Retriver with a good family history. The Doodle is mix and the outcome can't be guaranteed. And that's just looks. Shedding and temperament are as much a gamble as the looks.

Before getting one you should decide if you and your family can love the dog no matter how it looks, sheds, and behaves. You might get lucky and get exactly what you want.

I've noticed many first generation with smooth face and a little tint of facial hair that turns out very shaggy in the future. That doesn't seem to happen very often in the second generation. If that happens youll probably need to take her grooming every 6-8weeks.

I read a lot of your discussion about your search for your doodle, but you didn't mention temperament. I bring this up because I never expected my Doodles very rare, strange, and unacceptable personally. We keep working on her non stop because if we give up on her where is she going to end up?

I just got one of these mixture pups, and he's so sweet and cute!. I have lots of pics of him on my FB page www.facebook.com/YadierGoldendoodle
