Congratulations on your new guy, I can't wait to "meet" him. :)
And I don't think this should be in Puppy Madness; you need some experience here, lol.
Unfortunately, I haven't had a puppy since 1990, lol, and never tethered. I also haven't researched a possible link between tethering and separation anxiety, although I'm going to do that now. My instinct is that they it does not lead to separation anxiety, as I've known many dogs with separation anxiety who were never tethered as pups, (I had one), and many pups who were tethered and didn't develop separation anxiety.
Took me all of 10 seconds to find this: https://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/developing-separation-anxiety-wi...
Sophia Yin is wonderful, especially with dog/kid issues.
I agree. I think the Doggy Dan program is excellent and really agrees with my thoughts on training. I do think that balance is the key, and structure which includes some tethered time is great. I also think it's so important to get the puppy used to you coming and going so that he gains confidence that you are going to leave, but you will always return. Making coming and going a "non-event" helps so much. I would get a puppy used to being crated in a room with out me for periods of the day. My guys are 6 and 7 and I still use a "routine" for coming and going. I gate them in our bedroom and I always say the same thing "lay down and go to sleep...I'll be back in a little while". I never turn back....just walk out. When I return I show no emotion. I go to the room and make them sit calmly and then I take down the gate and pet them. If they are jumping around....the gate stays up until they're seated. I think the rituals really help them. I can't wait to see puppy pics.
Oh they are all adorable!
