I know this has been discussed many times before but my 9 week old pup is peeing in his crate. The crate is as small as can be for his size and I have tried taking away all blankets, towels etc. he will pretty much pee on himself even if he was outside and peed less than an hr prior. Is it still just that he's young? When I picked him up at the breeder he was literally sleeping in the litterbox in his pen so I know he has experience being close to his excrements! Any advice/encouragement?
Thanks!

He is still pretty young. Annabelle was 10 weeks when we brought her home. She peed in her crate during the night a few times that first week. I did use piddle pads which most people don't think is a good idea. She peed on them. After that first week when her bladder was stronger, she never did it again. I took the pads away. I still have a pack of the pads left, because I wasn't expecting her to be trained that quickly.

I had a male mini schnauzer that I got 35 years ago at 6 weeks, and he seemed to take a long time to train. Of course now they don't take them away from their mothers at 6 weeks anymore. I think his issues were his young age.

Thanks, Amy! I remember reading somewhere that pups really need to be like 11-12 weeks to be trained but I don't remember where I read it.

Sometimes the peeing is a result of a UTI - more common in females, but still something you might want to check out.

House breaking (peepee only), was more difficult for Chappie (and me), than I have experienced before.   He is now 6 months and has total freedom in the house, but is always by my side, so I can pretty much keep an eye on him.   I take him out in the daytime about every 3 hours, and he goes through the night with no problem.    When he get excited, before feedings he will dribble, so now I take him out before he eats.  About three weeks ago, I found pee by the front door, which told me he is finally getting the idea, and then I caught him peeing there recently, scolded him big time, and so far so good.  He peed in his crate only once, but it was too big for him and I made it much smaller, and now no problems there.

The bells don't work for Chappie, he rings them when I have the leash on him ready to go out!!  Keep at it, 9 weeks is still very young.   Chappie was not close to being house trained at 9 weeks.   Dee

My Cash is 3-1/2 yrs, so I wanted a puppy Carter is now 7-1/2 mos., she was my Christmas present from my 3 sons and husband. Carter was 3 months old when I got her, I know the lady the guys had gotten her from, she had said she was potty trained. Not really, I had many issues potting in the crate was one of them, pooing in the floor was another.  For the crate I starting treating her just like a toddler your trying to potty train, no water after a certain hour. After two nights, no more accidents in the crate. As for the poo in the floor, she got scolded, put outside while I cleaned the mess and then spent 15 mins in time out, aka doggy jail. All of Jan and Feb and half of Mar I was asking myself what the heck was I thinking wanting a puppy I was too old for this stuff. Happily to say the first of March at 5-1/2 months it all stopped, like a switch that was turned on she stopped. Doggy jail went away and so did having to sleep in her crate.
