I did the clippers. I could never get the hang of the dremel and Annabelle wasn't that cooperative when she was little. Her groomer clips then uses the dremel. I think clipping alone still leaves the nails sharp, just shorter. If you go the dremel route, you have to make sure all the hair around the nail is out of the way.
I bought a dremel and used it a few times. I had a tough time with it because of Bogey's fur. I would try to make sure his fur was out of the way but a few times it did get wrapped in the dremel. Since your pup is light colored, his nails are probably light colored too so you should be able to see the quick. I am just very conservative on how much I trim and then use a file so it's not so there aren't any rough edges.
I know you don't want to take your pup public places, but since you do go to your vet's office, why don't you make a quick trip there and ask them to cut the nails? it shouldn't cost much.
I Dremel Jake's nails. He doesn't love it, but he gets lots of treats and I feel better about it than clipping. I bought a cordless mini mite dremel off of Amazon. It also means I can do it myself, and they are smooth and not at all sharp. I am getting much faster, and i try to do it every week to every other week.
I am a neglectful pedicurist for my dogs. But I like the dremel way more than clipping. I've never had fur get caught in the spinning component, but I've heard of people putting on nylon stockings on their dog's foot and poking their nails through to help prevent fur catching. Would that work for you?
