Doodle Cost?

I understand this is a very personal question.

I got asked this question from another client at my Vet's office and it got me thinking.. Did I pay to much for Bowie? Or was the deal I got clearly a great price and I should be very grateful. 

Price doesn't make me ungrateful or grateful. If I had to pay for Bowie all over again I would. The reason I am asking this question is because I want to breed my Golden Ret one time with Bowie and I am curious how much is a fair price for a Goldendoodle and where are you located. 

I want to donate 2 of Bowie's babies to a training program for an emotional pet/ mental health person in need. They would get first pick and second pick. 

The rest I would like to rehome for a fair price. In my area Goldendoodles go for between $1,700-$2,100 I want to provide /give people who can't afford that price a chance to actually own one of these great dogs. 

So, where you from? How much are Goldendoodles in your area?

For a top notch breeder that meets the all breeder guidelines around $2500. About $1000 less for those who don't. I think no matter where you live the pricing is about the same. When I was looking, I did see one that was $3000, It wasn't in my state though.

Amanda, this doesn't address your question, but responsible breeding of dogs requires that you do genetic health testing done of the parents before they are bred. That costs thousands and thousands of dollars, and much of it ccannot be done until the dogs are past 2 years old.  That's why the reputable doodle breeders charge high prices. I personally would not take a puppy from untested parents if you gave him to me for free. The puppy mill doodles on ad sites like Next Day Pets and Puppy Find sell for much less, sometimes as low as $350. In fact, low prcies for a doodle puppy are a red flag that you are dealing with a puppy mill or BYB. 

Also, IF you bought Bowie from a reputable, responsible breeder who health tests her dogs, you can't breed him unless you purchased breeding rights. Otherwise there would be a clause in your purchase contract specifying that he MUST be neutered by a certain age. If there isn't, he isn't from health tested parents, and for that matter, neither is your Golden. 

Please reconsider breeding your dogs.

Here are the guidelines Doodle Kisses recommends for choosing a breeder. These are the things most of the active members here would be looking for before buying one of your puppies. (If you are charging more than a small adoption fee, it's not "rehoming", it's selling, BTW). They include genetic health testing for hips, eyes, heart, and von Willebrand's, and the parents need to be at least two years old. A two year health warranty would also be required.

Also, breeding a doodle back to a Golden Retriever is going to result in a high possibility of the puppies looking more like Goldens than doodles, and shedding. If Bowie is an F1, the pups would be 3/4 Golden Retriever. There are no reputable doodle breeders producing that mix, for obvious reasons, and certainly none charging $2000 per pup.

However, Bowie's parents and grandparents were tested for everything you mentioned. I did sign a contract but I have breeding/studding permission I won't go into those particular terms of that since this isn't a breeding thread.  Also, my Golden Ret has been tested for everything. She is older than 2. This isn't something I am willing to start a debate about. I am not set on breeding. This was a thread about cost. Not breeding. But, I truly appreciate you being so aware and giving me your concerns. Thank you. 

By the way, as a side note, Bowie isn't F1.

Friends have told me they paid between $1000 and $1800 for goldendoodles here in eastern Washington for F1s and at the higher end for F1b.  I hope you do not mind me asking - but I am curious why you would considering breeding Bowie back to a Golden Retriever? Is it to get flat-coated doodles?

If all of the other requirements of responsible breeding were met, I would still think that breeding back to a GR would lower your price somewhat so this wouldn't really be an apples to apples comparison with the folks giving you prices here.   Just My Opinion.
