How much dry food should a 9 week old puppy be eating? Our vet suggested Royal Canin and he's been eating it since Saturday afternoon. Our breeder suggested 1/2 cup three times a day. Ollie hasn't finished a bowl all day. He's pretty lathargic as well.. Has slept a ton. Goes on walks fine and plays fine and mostly wants to sleep. It's about 100 degrees here in Idaho, could the heat be affecting his eating patterns?

I just went on what our food package said for his weight!

First off you should have him on the breeders food and then transition over to what you are going to feed him. Let me find something Karen our food guru has posted on how it is done. Although she may chime in here.

This was from a discussion last month. Dog food guidelines can be different and you have to go by the recommended amounts on the food you are feeding them. In the case of this discussion she wants to feed her dog Orijen which is quite possibly the best dog food out there. With that you feed less a day because it has more calories a cup than the average food. The percents would still be the same for the switch over.

We were and then the following morning he threw everything up from the previous day. Our vet suggested a different food so we've been using that. He ate up a storm this morning.

our pup would sometime throw up his food also.  I think it took him time to learn how to burp without the food coming up.

we started having rest time after eating to let the food digest. eating and playing always yielded throw up. 6 months and he was a eating and burping dood!

We have a pup that doesn't eat a lot.  I thought about switching food, but the vet encouraged me to not do so.  Vet said, dog will eat when he is hungry.  I am so thankful I listened to her.

I find our pup likes to sleep a lot! 14 hours or more. (night time plus morning nap, and afternoon nap) I think if they don't move around a whole lot, they don't need to eat.

Talk with your vet and breeder!  As long as there are no other issues, I think all will be fine.

I am not a professional, but just wanted to share how little our pup eats. He is 3 and he only ate 1/2 cup of dog food all day yesterday. He is 32 pounds.

Ollie sleeps a ton too. At least 3 naps a day. He wasn't sleeping very well through the night so I chalked it up to not being rested. Thanks for easing my worry. Our little guy is 9 weeks, 5 lbs and we are feeding him 1/2 cup at 7am, noon and 5pm.

5 lbs is a tiny pup....maybe a little less than 1/2 cup would work....Lexee was 12 lbs when we took her home and ate 1/4 cup 3/day ..... maybe feed him less and he will poop less and eat it all....

Tiny little doodle :)

Thanks! He gobbled up breakfast and then only ate half of his lunch. I'll try the small portion, see if that works.
