Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So there's been a couple posts on Facebook of people being told by their normal pet stores where they buy Orijen that they should look to change because of the new sourcing and kitchen in Kentucky for Orijen.   I thought maybe this was misinformation but I'm seeing info that some of the ingredients did indeed change along with vitamin levels.  I stopped at our local store (Hollywood Feed) and they said the same thing about the quality level going down.   Both of my doodles are on Six Fish and they do very well with it.  I hate the thought of changing but I don't want to feed them something that isn't up to par quality wise and I certainly don't want to pay for quality that isn't there anymore.  Any info on this or thoughts?   I remember when they announced the new facility they assured the quality would not be compromised and all that, but I'm having trouble trusting it based on the limited info so far.  Picture of my girls for fun.  <3 them !!

All of my suggestions are here in the Food Group, and as always, the info will be updated when and if anything changes. Believe me, I do understand being overly cautious about the choices we make for our dogs. That was the reason for this group from the beginning, to help people make good informed choices. :)

Again, thanks for your hard work, and I will following this group closely........have a safe holiday weekend and big hugs to your beautiful doodle!

Thank you Charlotte, you have a good weekend too. :)

thank you for the reassurance.  really appreciate it!!

I feed primarily the Origen Six Fish, and rotate in the Regional Red and Adult. The new ingredient lists are all in the brochure, here:      http://www.orijen.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/DS-ORI-Dog-Brochure...

In comparing the Six Fish in the brochure, and the bag I have at home, the biggest thing I noticed right off the bat is that the Omega 6:3 ratio is even BETTER in the new formula- 2.3%/2%. Wow! I don't believe there is any other food on the market that is that high. It uses primarily mackerel instead of salmon, and there are a couple of minor changes in the bean, lentils, etc. Other than that, it looks very similar. The calcium, phosphorus. glucosamine and chondroitin levels are a little lower in the new formula- I guess mackerel probably has less bones in it than salmon does! I don't know the significance of those changes- I'll let Karen analyze and explain.

Bottom line for me after reading this discussion and the brochure- I'm sticking with it. My Doodles are thriving on it, and unless for some reason they don't tolerate the change, I still think that it is the best food on the market.

Thanks for providing this link, Lori, it's very helpful. I'll take an in-depth look later today.

I agree...still the best dry pet food on the market.

Interesting. The staff at our local Hollywood Feed was very positive about the change. I was told it been planned for some time as Champion was unable to meet demand with just the Canadian facilities. And that any changes in formula were due to differences in local sources. My only complaint is that during this change over some formulas have been hard to get.

The staff at your store sounds very well informed, Kamela. What they told you is true. And the KY facility has been two years in the works.

I think one of the reasons for building the US facility was that Champion were often having troubles importing to the US from Canada, and I believe that is why some of the formulas were not available there. Now they have their own facility in Kentucky using American ingredients, that won't be an issue any more.

There was a time several years ago when some of the Orijen formulas were very difficult to get at a certain time every year, I believe in the Fall, and it was related to the shortages of certain types of Canadian fish at that time of year. We have some old discussions here about that.

Found one of them. Apparently it had something to do with fishing permits having been exhausted by the end of the year: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/getting...

And you and I had this exchange about it back in 2009, Stella!!

Has anyone else had difficulty getting hold of their dog food? We live in Canada and are being affected by the "politics" going on right now about importing between the USA and Canada. Several of the treats we liked are no longer available over here because they have been stopped from importing. Now, we have been told we are going to have difficulty getting our Acana dog food - and that is made here in Canada!! Apparently, everyone who was feeding a good brand of food made in the USA can't get it anymore and so is changing to Acana or Orijin... meaning they can't keep up with the demand - Help!!! I think I am going to have to visit several stores and see if I can stockpile!

I'm getting very nervous about the rumors of a shortage with the Champion foods. My favorite store was out of the Orijen Adult formula for a while, and they have signs posted from Orijen apologizing for the shortages. I have no extra freezer space, no basement, and I'm not supposed to buy more than a month's worth of food at a time.
This is why it's good to rotate foods; it gives you something to go to if there's a shortage, a formula change, or a recall.
I'm going to the dog food "boutique" in the next town this weekend and look for an alternative. There are some other premium grain-frees I've been meaning to check out anyway.
