My poor puppy has been sick this weekend. It all started on Friday morning, when he caught his first bunny. There are a ton of them in our neighborhood and a family which lives under our deck, which are always taunting him. The bunny he caught was a baby, and he didn't eat it, he just wanted to play with it like a toy. Thankfully, I was able to get him to drop it and leave it (it took a few tries, but he did) and got him inside. I talked to the vet to see if he needed to go in to be checked and they said since he didn't eat it, he would be fine.

Fast forward to 10:30 pm on Friday night - I took Lambeau out for his final potty and he was slow coming back. I saw him standing over something and freaked out that it was another bunny. I grabbed the flashlight and saw that it was a pile of vomit and there were two more next to it. I figured his dinner just didn't settle (he has a history of sensitive tummy issues) and brought him inside for some water and bedtime. After he vomited / dry heaved 3 more times (7 total) I took him into the emergency vet at 11:30 pm. They did bloodwork and x-rays and said there was a blob on the x-ray which could be something or could be poop. They gave him a shot of Zofran for his nausea and he FREAKED out. He was like an itchy stroke patient. His back legs were not working, he was trying to scratch and he was walking in circles and barking at the injection site. It was terrifying. About 2 am they sent us home. At 6:30 am he vomited again. And after 2 more rounds, I called my vet. They took him for the day, put an IV in him and did more bloodwork and more xrays. They saw the same blob on their xrays but could not tell if it was anything of concern. They sent him home with some I/D wet food when they closed and told us to go back to the emergency vet if he puked any more.

I started him on 1 tablespoon of wet food and some water as they recommended, and he puked it up within 30 min. The poor thing was so hungry, he was jumping up on the counters and tables looking for food, barking at the bag of kibble, and found a few rogue pieces of kibble on the floor that he ate (and he never eats off the floor). I decided to try and give him some pumpkin and some chicken water (I steamed a few chicken breasts for him, but saved the water I cooked it in). That stayed down all night! He woke up his old puppy self, and we have been taking it slow on the food today. Every two hours he is getting tiny bits of chicken and they are staying down. He hasn't had much water, and they have an IV they want me to give him, but I am worried about putting the needle in him.

I am hoping that he continues to keep down food. I am still at a loss for what happened. 3 vets all told me it wasn't the bunny, but they never found any other reason for him to get so sick so fast. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I will likely take him in for another xray or an ultrasound to check on the blob... Thank goodness for pet insurance!

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles and I am wishing your pup continues to improve. It must be frightening. I know I was close to calling my vet in a panic when my dog vomited 4 times one evening and into the night, and then vomited foam the next morning. But by mid-day she was eating small amounts of kibble at a time and holding it down. With her, I am going to mark the event on a calendar because I think she may do this around the time I give her her heart worm and flea/tick treatments. I think when she did this a few months ago, it was around the same time of the month, but I hadn't marked it.

I am so glad he is improving. Ned got very sick once, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc. Whatever his was it was not  contagious as the other dogs didn't get it. The vet treated the symptoms and he recovered fully.  I assume he got into something. but we will never know.

Judith and Addie make a good point about the flea/tick prevention treatments...Dogs can have symptoms such as nausea from the medication. Perhaps, you have given your pup the prevention meds and that is what he is reacting to and not the bunny?

Pls keep us posted..thx
