Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi all,
I broke down and bought a set of animal grade clippers and would like to attempt to groom Jake myself.
Does anyone have recommendations of videos or tutorials that help with grooming. Simple things like guard sizes etc. Would be great.
Thank you!

People will give you great advice on here, but for us...we have kind of used the trial and error method. We just jumped in with a larger guard at first (1/4" or so) and just recently used our smallest guard for his whole body as a "summer" cut. We're getting better each time. A few tips - make sure your pup is VERY well brushed before you try to use clippers. We use a dematting comb to get out small matts and a slicker brush for the whole body (regularly). I trim Angus' face/ears with scissors. I kinda just watched videos on youtube and looked at pictures of doodles to figure out the shape I was looking for...
Here's Angus' most recent cut from a week ago :) Always hard to see his haircuts since he's black and all.
Thank you! He's a a very sweet boy...often crazy and goofy..but happy-go-lucky and lovable. We're definitely getting more skilled each time we do a haircut. It has taken a good amount of time/practice to learn how to use all the different tools and get the shape I want - totally worth it though because taking him to the self-grooming place is $16 !!!
I am very happy I purchased this dvd. you can check my page for the discussion and debate about getting it and see pics of my dog Taps. This video is easy, to each detail exampled , I think well worth and more https://www.smagdog.com/productdisplay/grooming-your-doodle-dvd
I don't know about guard sizes, but I wrote this tutorial after doing Ragley's first groom. You just have to go for it! The first swipe is the most difficult and then I think you will find it to be quite fun!
Hope this helps:
