Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

For some reason dk will not let me comment on my last discussion.  I took Yeti to the vet and she seems to think that his parasite was never gone even though his stool went back to normal for a couple of weeks.  She did a fecal exam and it came back negative so they are sending it to the lab for further testing (I do believe she mentioned Giardia and something else).

He was also becoming pretty dehydrated so they gave him some fluids to help bring him back to life a little.  No wonder why he seemed so weak :(.

On top of the fluids they gave him, they also gave him nausea medicine to help his vomiting. We laid pretty low tonight and he seemed to be feeling better. At least no more throwing up (as of right now).

If tests from the lab come back negative she suggested an xray or ultra sound to see if something is blocking his intestines. I so so so hope nothing is.  This makes me very nervous.

If the lab comes up negative she said another possibility could be that our little guy has a really sensitive stomach. She suggested changing his food so i will be doing some research on the food page for a new food for Yeti.

We will find out by the end of the week at the latest what the lab results say, and will go from there.

Just got a phone call from the vet! She said that the fecal test from the lab came up negative for both giardia or cocoidia. In a way I'm kinda sad because I was hoping for an answer. This is the second time in a month that he has had random explosive diarrhea with no signs of "worms." Our vet thinks it's possibly just a sensitive stomach issue that may have flared up. She prescribed us metronidazole IF WE WANT IT. But as Karen has stated in other posts, why take something if there is no worm to treat? She also didn't feel panacur was necessary seeings how his tests came back negative.

The good news is he seems to be feeling much better. After he got fluids the other night, he perked right up to his usual self. He has been very playful (although we're trying not to play much incase his tummy is still bothering him), eating his food right up, not vomiting, and is pooping pretty normal. I'm going to continue the bland diet throughout the weekend and then possibly switch up his food to something better.

Again, I really think that probiotics would help a lot. It's highly likely that he has a bacterial imbalance due to the metronidazole, and even if he doesn't, probiotics are beneficial anyway. I'm glad the fecal was negative.

Do you think I would really mess him up by switching his kibble up? We have him eating 5 cups of sweet potato/chicken with proviable 2 times a day! We are on purina pro plan right now (I know it's awful) and am going to research a new brand tonight when yeti goes to bed. I don't want to get him going regularly again only to screw him up

I would absolutely not change his food right now. He's not even back on kibble yet. Get him back on that, and wait until his digestion has been normal for a couple of weeks before you start switching foods.

Yikes, 5 cups seems excessive. Is this straight kibble.  How much does Yeti weigh?

He gets 2.5 cups of kibble a day! I thought the rule of thumb for a bland diet was to double the amount of kibble he gets. I could have miss understood though.

It is double for homemade food. I think Linda thought you were feeding 5 cups of kibble.

Hahaha oh no! Although, i bet he would love it hahaha :)

LOL

Your right Karen.  After I posted, I was wondering if she might be feeding home cooked since he is having digestive issues.  I could not imagine 5 cups of kibble LOL.
