Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi all,
Jake is an almost 6 month old f1b standard golden doodle and has been eating, drinking and acting totally normal except his poop over the last 2 days has been on the softer side. Sometimes like soft serve and sometimes more firmed but still soft. He has also has poop accidents in our room the last 2 nights in the middle of the night.

His food has stayed the same for the last 2 months since we moved him to Canidae puppy grain free chicken formula.

I am just at a complete loss.

I took a sample in to the vet today but I can't imagine it will show anything.

I think you were smart to take in a poop sample to the vet. Maybe this is just a bug, but it is good to get it tested. Keep us posted.

UPDATE: the stool sample tested negative for parasites and now they just want to give him metronidazole.

I think that is a bad idea because I'm don't even know he is sick and it seems wrong to just give him the antibiotic when I don't even know if he needs it.

What do I do instead though?

I have some providable DC and will start that 2 times a day.

I can give him canned pumpkin as well, but how much?

Dont give him the metronidazole if he is negative for any parasites.  As Karen has kindly pointed out to me and many others, its not even good for them to take it if they ARE positive for parasites, let alone negative for them.  I give Yeti canned pumpkin everyday.  We tell him its a treat after going potty and he LOVES it.  We usually just do a generous spoonful of it. :)

I would absolutely NOT give metronidazole without a verifiable parasite or infection.

Are you sure he hasn't been getting anything new to eat? Any new treats, possibly at daycare or training, or something indoors that he's gotten into? A change in mealtimes or walks?

The Proviable is a good idea, but I would not give pumpkin. That could make matters worse, if he is pooping in his crate at night due to urgency.

No new treats, no change in walks. He does like to try and eat sticks from a bottlebrush or Texas sage bush (not sure which) but we try to keep him away from the bush.

I'm just so upset because the vet keeps pushing metronidazole and I don't like the idea, but I don't know what else to do.

He is not created at night, he is just pooping in front of the door out of our room, and it is soft.

Metronidazole isn't going to fix that, though.

If the vet wants you to give him something, ask for Panacur. It's harmless, unlike metronidazole, and it's used to treat some of the same things.

I'm just racking my brain as to what could be causing this. Other than the poop issue he is acting totally fine.

I gave him the proviable DC twice today and I did give him some pumpkin before I saw your message Karen.

He has since pooped twice, once was just soft but formed and the other was like really soft soft serve.

Do you guys think I should switch him to boiled chicken and sweet potatoes?

Should I insist on taking him in or just wait a couple more days and see?

Thank you for everyone that has responded.

I'm stumped, too. Sometimes giardia doesn't show up in a fecal test, as the cysts are not present in every sample. Maybe you should start him on Panacur just as a precaution. But insist on Panacur, not metronidazole.

I second Karen's suggestion.  Be sure to give the Proviable at least two hours different in time from the Panacur and continue it for a week or two afterwards.

Could you possibly be over-feeding?

He is almost 6 months old and gets 2.5 cups of the Canidae grain free puppy, chicken formula. I think I will call them and see about the panacur.

I just wonder where he got a bug from, poor guy
Another update...
I have been giving him proviable DC twice a day and continued to give him the pumpkin because after the first spoonful things were better.
No pooping in our room last night and his stool is starting to look more normal.
I don't know if he had a bug or somehow got something he should have but so far so good.
Oh thank goodness!!! I hope everything continues to turn around for you guys ❤️
