While combing Haley last week I found a huge loose tangled mat on his side. This was very surprising because Haley rarely mats. I cut mat off as it was so bad I could not work it out. Again, Sunday there was a tangle of hair in the same place. This one I was able to work out. Monday night I caught him licking his side and upon investigation I found a hotspot where he had been licking and the hair was tangling again. Haley is almost 8 years old and this is the first time he has had a hotspot. I straightened the hair out; cut it away from the sore and applied Neo-Predef powder. Tuesday morning I caught Haley licking the spot again so I put the C.O.S. on him and got ready to take him to the vet. We were at the vet’s for almost three hours. : (  Haley got an injection and instructions to continue applying the Neo-Predef for a couple of days until the drug kicks in. I am keeping him in the cone until then. He is doing quite well with it.

Lesson learned, if your doodle suddenly gets a mat, especially in a strange place, investigate under it.

He looks surprisingly happy despite the cone! I hope he feels better very soon!

Thank you Becka.  After the last 24 hours he realizes it is not going away soon and he isn't as happy.

Poor Haley:( Well.. now Bella and Haley can be "Cone Buddys":)

Poor Bella. That would be a sight and a disaster inside; two doodles bumping into each other and everything else. : )

Great advise Anne.  Charlie was recently licking right front paw.  And developed a mat between two toes. I did not even realize it was there and under that was indication he either was stuck with a thistle, a bee sting, or ??  They shaved his foot up 3 inches and now he has one poodle foot!   I have found obsessive licking is usually the result of some injury.

Sometimes they aren't as smart as we think they are.
Wishing Haley a speedy recovery.
Thanks F.

Poor Haley! I hope he feels better soon!

Thanks Karen.
I'm on my iPad so can't include a pic, but my Hartley is also wearing the cone of shame (because he was attacked by another dog and has stitches). I can't leave him at home because he manages to get the cone off, so I have been sneaking him to work with me and he hangs out in the staff room!
