Hi Folks,
We just bought a bag of Charlee Bear treats from Trader Joes, as our dog trainer was using them and Lambeau really liked them but I noticed there is garlic in the recipe. They have the below statement on their website but because I trust you all more, I wanted to see how you felt about there being garlic in these treats? Thanks for your insight!

We have researched the current concern about garlic and have been advised that at the level it is in our treats it does not present any problem. All of our flavors of Charlee Bear Treats have .38 grams of garlic per pound of greats, except our Cheese & Egg flavor. The Cheese & Egg flavor has about .9 grams per pound. There is about 2 grams of garlic powder in a teaspoon. This means that a dog would have to eat 5.25 1 lb bags, or about 2,000, of any flavor of our treats (except Cheese & Egg), and about 2.5 1 lb bags of Cheese & Egg Flavor, or approximately 900 treats, to eat 1 teaspoon of garlic. This tiny bit of garlic has always been a part of our recipe and we believe it helps give it the flavor dogs love. We have been making Charlee Bears for over 17 years and all of us have been giving them to our dogs for all of that time. Please go to Understanding Garlic by Dr. Dave Summers and www.dog-health-guide.org/dog for more information on garlic.

I agree with them that a tiny bit of garlic is not a problem. But I'd avoid the cheese & egg flavor, and I'd give them very sparingly.
Here's some good information to help you make up your own mind about whether or not to give treats containing garlic:

I don't have an opinion on the garlic but I've used these treats for 3 of my dogs over the past 13 years and had no problems. I like them because they're dry, a good size for training, and I can get them at Trader Joe's. Although we've tried the other varieties once or twice, I usually get the original liver flavor.
