My 18 week doodle is biting horribly. I know that they say they are mouthy puppies, but she has gone from playful biting which calmed down the past couple of weeks to hard hurtful biting and biting aggressively sending my kids in tears several times a day the last couple days. I even heard a growl. She gets crazy and even bites my legs when I turn my back to her. She can be so sweet other times. Help!! Any tips?
Hi, one of my parents is on blood thinners and they love having my pair of doodles to keep them company during the day. Our youngest Finley is 5 months old - her teeth are falling out now. What works for us is:
- a tired pup - she is walked 2 miles in the morning & plays at night outside until she is exhausted.
- she knows the word "no"
- keeping her on a short leash - behavior is easily corrected and she will quickly do a sit/down/stay & we will make her stay & ignore her if she was misbehaving
- we have a water bottle with pennies - to snap her out of an unwanted behavior - for older sister we used the red can of pet corrector ( just don't let them see where the correction is coming from - we stash the bottle behind couch pillows and tuck on shelves/counters).
-we substitute a frozen wash cloth or a teething toy when particularly mouthy or redirect with Kong wobbler - which has entire lunch meal inside.
-you can train the pup to go to its bed/kennel on command and stay when things are getting crazy and the pup needs to calm
I found it much harder to train a pup when my kids were older around more (not in school) and had opinions. We ended up - for the safety of the dog - using a professional trainer where the pup is a resident for 14 days. Totally worth the investment. And when the pup knows what "no" means - you can see in their face that they get it and everything is making sense to them suddenly and all training is then so much easier.
We are suffering with tummy troubles and sleep deprivation with our Finley. Hang in there -

Thank you so much!! I hope your Finley is feeling better soon! I agree, counting down the days u til the kids go to school so she is not getting 10 different commands. Thank you for the tips. I think keeping her on the leash will be a great start for us and with your other tips, I hope to get it under control.
