Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I feel I should know this but can someone explain the various types of breeding combinations of doodles in general.
Thanks

Well, they are using poodles for breeding with all types of dogs these days. F1 means a first generation mix, so usually a poodle stud (any size or color) and another breed (labrador, golden retriever, ALD, BMD, OES, schnowzer, cocker, etc.) for the female (bitch). You can get so many different combos and they come up with cute names for these F1 mixes, like cockapoo, sheepadoodle, Jackapoo, etc. So, does that clear things up a bit? It is rather confusing. They are many sizes, many colors, and all kinds of combos. It is important to get a responsible breeder for both the genetic lines and the health issues. F1 is probably as far as you would want to go, but the F1b goldendoodles are spectacular dogs. The b means that a F1 was bred back to a poodle to get more poodle characteristics.
F1 is not necessarily the 'best' cross, but one needs to know that a 2nd or 3rd generation is least stable for getting what most deem doodle traits - less shedding, facial furnishings. Multigenerational 4+ is most stable for doodle traits. However, in the long run, they are a mixed breed dogs with mixed genes. I know of at least one doodle in France beside yours, Kate, but I don't know where in France. :-}
Here is a link to the grading system for goldendoodles from the GANA website. Substitute any breed for the Golden Retriever and this still applies. i.e. for labradoodle generations, substitute Labrador Retriever for Golden Retriever, etc.
Thanks for that explanation...clears it all up for me.
Ive had two Goldendoodles, one still with me at 7 years. I am now in France and never seen another one here, but am constantly stopped and asked about the breed.
Thanks to everyone.
Phew...thank you for that clarification ;-)
LOL!
I think this is a little confusing." F1B=F1" doesn't make sense to me. You need to take that space out from between F1 and doodle so that it reads F1B= F1 doodle x Poodle and not
" F1B = F1 _____doodle x Poodle."
Same with the F2 line. Get those spaces out of there in front of the word "doodle".
Sure easy enough. I edited the GANA thing and wanted the blank to mean any kind of doodle. But I can edit as you suggest. Anything else regarding the explanations?
Honestly, I find this way more confusing than the one that April had posted - that was so easy to understand (even though someone complained). If you're going to have a DK reference chart, I think you should have two separate charts - one for goldendoodles and one for labradoodles - that way if someone searches they will find the chart they are looking for.
Nobody really uses the term "F3" any more. It's a multigen, and there is still no way to know whether any individual multigen will be non-shedding. We have members here with 7th generation doodles that shed. IMO, if shedding is a concern, a doodle of any generation is a big mistake, but you are still better off with an F1B than any other doodle generation.
