Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
It’s been a bit since I have visited this site (after forgetting my password).:-/
I was wondering if anyone has had to undergo a splenectomy for their doodle?
I am facing that today, last Wednesday when I came home from work, I found that Stella had vomited her breakfast. I went to the store to buy her chicken and rice and made it for her but she wouldn’t eat. Stella being the food hound that she is, I knew something was wrong. In the morning I took her to my vet where they thought that she may have a blockage. After running test and x-rays discovered in fact she did…but while doing the ultrasound also discovered a “lesion” on her spleen which was completely unrelated to her blockage issue in the stomach. She was given a dose of Bactrim to try and remove the blockage which worked. After recovering from the odd unknown blockage we are now back at the vet to have her spleen removed.
Stella is only 8… she will be 9 in November. My vet says that she has a 50/50 chance that the tumor in benign. He said we are very lucky to have found it early while dealing with the first issue.
So one I’d like to know if anyone else has gone through this terrible ordeal? The stress is a little overwhelming.
Two, please be aware that this is apparently a very common occurrence among larger breed dogs, in particular Golden Retrievers between the ages of 8-10. Ask for an ultrasound on your 8 year old wellness visit!

Sorry to hear this, hope it all turns out well.
I hope everything goes well, and she has a quick recovery:)
Sending good thoughts. I am glad that you were able to get early medical attention for both issues. Thanks for sharing this info on spleen problems for goldens as well.
I am so sorry to read that Stella is having problems. I guess the blockage was a good thing, so that the tumor was discovered early. I am sending hugs and pawsitive wishes for a full recovery.
Please keep us updated.
Just got word that surgery went well. There were no other spots of concern. We pick her up tomorrow and then wait for the results.
Thank you for all your well wishes!
Hooray! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I'm so glad the surgery went well. I'm sure you can't wait to have her back home with you. Hope you both have a peaceful night.
Got the news last night. It was benign! Thank you for your well wishes and positive thoughts.
My hope is that we are more aware and will be vigilante as our pups start to age. Remember the all mighty ultrasound!
