LDN (Low dose naltrexone)

Has anyone had any experience with LDN and dog cancer?

While I haven't had experience with this, I do belong to another pet health related Yahoo group and it's been very helpful.

I did get a prescription from our vet and started Abby on it a week ago. She has had no side effects so far, has a good appetite and is actually doing real well as far as her personality. She still wants to chase her ball and loves when I horse around with her or play hide and seek. Abby was diagnosed with stage 3 mast cell tumor cancer in July that couldn't totally be removed, and they have assumed that it has metastisized already so we decided not to do the chemo thing. LDN has done some great things for dogs as well as people and I hope we will be as lucky. Abby was given 6 months to 2 years and I am praying for closer to the 2 year mark. I cook a cancer diet food for her, and have her on the LDN. I have a bottle of prednisone if and when the time comes, but for now we are just enjoying her, taking lots of pictures and videos, and loving her the best way we know how. Guaranteed, your dog will break your heart at least once in it's life.

I would think metastatic cancer is why one would do chemo.

They said it could give her, at best, 6 more months. Putting her through that for just a possible 6 months more just didn't seem to be the thing to do. We agonized about that decision, and cried, and prayed, and cried some more, and in the end, as a family, we decided that this way was best. Believe me, it was one of the hardest decisions we had to make. We love our girl immensely and she is a very important part of our family. But we want her to be Abby for as long as she has, and we will do all we can to make that happen - without  chemo. Our vet agrees. We didn't make this decision lightly. I cry every single day at the thought of losing her.

So sorry to hear this and I so hope you get more than maximum time.  My daughter had a similar circumstance with her malamute and they made a similar decision which for them was definitely the way to go. They had another very good two years with their beautiful girl and her personality remained throughout. Hugs and best wishes to you, your family & beautiful Abby.

And, I, too, am a member of that Group. I have done tons of reading on many different options and LDN seemed to be the best route for us. I was just hoping someone here had some experience with it. My vet actually knew nothing about this but says it's worth a try. They just love Abby there. So, her vet will be learning right along side of us.
