I might be crazy! (second dood)

I have been going through this I need a puppy, I really don't need a puppy conundrum all the time with myself. I look at my breeders website, I look at the shelter website. I convince myself I need another dog. Then I convince myself I don't. 

Then today when I was at work looking at Katie's breeders website I saw that they have decided to retire Katie's mom. She's a sweet 6 year old and they are going to retire her for the price of a spay and a dental. And I don't think I can resist. I love Katie so much. I'm sure that her mom is just as sweet. 

There's part of me that thinks that life is a lot easier with just one dog. But there's part of me that thinks that life is a lot more fun with two. I just hope I'm doing the right thing. I don't want to be abandoned by dogs who would rather play with each other than me. 

Anyway, I'm excited, I'm nervous, I hope I figure out what the right thing is to do.

I think that giving a forever home to a retired breeding dog is a wonderful thing to do. Puppies find homes easily. 6 year old retired breeders, not so much. I hope it turns out to be a blessing for all of you.

It makes me sad to think that after having all those babies for all those people that she wouldn't get to spend the rest of her life being someone's beloved bed dog. I guess it makes sense that people really just want cute puppies (though if you add up the cost of all the stuff Katie ate, I'm not sure why.) But it really makes me want to love on her mama that much more.

It sounds like a great opportunity if you are looking for a second dog anyway.

This sounds wonderful to me.  I am sure you would provide a loving forever home to Katie's mom.  I know a few others who have gotten their dog's moms.  I love it.

Her name is Rosie. And it sounds like I'm going to pick her up on Tuesday. I'm waiting to hear from the breeder what time - they are about 3 hours from me and I am all aflutter with excitement. The only thing is, I wonder if Rosie might not mind if I call her something else. I have an aunt Rosie, who I adore... but it I feel like it might be confusing if everyone is Rosie! I've been pretty decided that my next dog would be Ava Grace. And I kind of think that even if a dog knows their name they don't have a sentimental attachment to it... New life, new name? I'm babbling. The name thing is to be determined. She might still end up a Rosie. But I'll definitely post a picture. I just think it's special to have this opportunity. 

I wonder if Katie and her mom will know each other. This could be a fabulous reunion.

No, they probably won't know each other but will bond quickly.  I love two names.  My newest dog is MonaChica.  Names are very interesting and how you come up with them.

My dogs get my favorite baby names. I always collected baby names, and since there are no babies, I doubt that you'll ever find me with a Fido. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I have Katie and Olivia. In the past there was Mason, Avery, Darby, and Teddy. Teddy was my first dog and probably the closest to a dog name - but he was named for a favorite character on a TV show - so definitely a person.

Same here, we had Toby and then Charlie our rescue and now Annabelle. They aren't my favorite baby names though. My 3 kids named Charlie and I named the other 2. I had thought about getting a girl and boy dog and naming them Rick and Kate after characters on Castle, which was my favorite tv show for years. Then the last season was so horrible that I am glad I didn't go that route or I would have a constant reminder of the atrocity they did to my favorite show.

We had a Marx Bros. theme going with our dogs.  First was Groucho Too (named after his father Groucho), and then Harpo, and then Zeppo.  Charlie wanted a male dog and to name him Chico, but we got a female, so I named her MonaChica.  He calls her Chica anyway. Chica means little girl in Spanish, and that is okay, but not what I would choose for my puppy.

This is just my opinion, but if she is 6 and was actually in an environment where she was one of the family, then she most certainly does know her name and have an attachment to it.  It is not the end of the world if you change it and she would learn her new name, but it might be easier to rename her something similar, like Maizie.  You might ask your aunt - she might get a real kick out of having a beloved pet named after her. My suggestion would be to call her both her old name and new name together for a while, gradually dropping the old name.
