Cheddar is a standard sized goldendoodle pup. He measured 25.4 lbs at 16 weeks and 30 lbs at 17 weeks. So he is growing fast. Cheddar currently sleeps in a plastic airline crate, but I know he will outgrow it by the time he is fully grown. We need to buy a wire crate that folds for travel anyways, so I am trying to figure out what size to get.

Since he will most likely be at least 60 if not 70+ lbs as an adult, do you think a 42" crate would be big enough? Or would it be better to buy a 48" crate?

What has been your experience with similar sized doodles?

Thank you in advance!

I haven't used a crate for Myla since she was eight months old so I'm not much help but I would think that the 48 inch crate would be better so that he could get up and turn around comfortably if he'll be in there for extended periods.  When they are puppies and are being potty trained, you don't want them having a huge area in the crate, but as Cheddar is almost five months old, I think you can trust him in the larger crate.  If you put in "crate" in the search bar in the top right hand corner of this page, you will get a lot of discussions on this topic :)

Once Murphy (my Standard size Doodle) was fully potty trained we moved him to a large crate so that he could move around....I would go with the 48 inch size.

I have a friend who got her pup from the same litter and went with a 42" crate and now at 7 month old, she is buying another 48".  I would suggest 48" with a divider.  Midwest sells them for under $70 on amazon.  If you prefer higher quality, they sell very heavy ones at petsmart but they are over $150

I would go for the 48". I have a standard Goldendoodle. Bought him a 42" and he outgrew it really fast. At 7 months, I had to change it to a bigger one.

Sounds like 48" is the way to go, thank you for sharing your experiences and advice!

If you have enough room for the bed, that the 48''. But any way, I would vote 48'', because a small crate, no matter whether it fits the dog, would make your dog feel stressful.

So, get a bigger one.
