Just curious, Maci got bit/scratched by another dog. It was a brief altercation, but enough that she got
a wound along the top of her nose. It bled for awhile, but it is healing. It's been about a month now. My question is, the black part on the top of her snout is still pink, does anyone know if this will stay pink or turn black again?
Makes me sad to see the pink cause it reminds me of when it happened.
( it's not actually her nose, but the black part on top between the nose and eyes)

I'm so sorry that happened to poor Maci.

I'm not sure about the pigment returning; if there's scarring there, I think it will stay pink, but I don't know. :(

If the wound was deep enough, it would definitely create scar tissue. Scar tissue always has a different color from one's normal skin. Same thing with humans. If you have any scars, you should be able to see the difference in color and texture from your normal skin. It does improve over time, but I doubt from your description of the injury that it will ever return even close to normal.

My yellow lab got her ear pierced by another dog once, and her fur there never grew back. The scar was disguised though because of her surrounding fur and her natural pigment. Scars are more apparent on black skinned dogs.

I did wound care in people for a long time and I can tell you what we always told them - I'm sure it's not exactly the same but maybe similar enough to be useful. It can take more than a year for the pigment to return to "normal" in skin. During that time it's considered an "active scar," so it's still healing. And you want to be careful of sun exposure during that time because burning or "tanning" it will affect how the pigment returns. Healed burned skin is bright shiny pink, but then you will see almost little brown freckles (and it is more apparent in darker skinned individuals) and that is the pigment returning. I'm sure it will continue to improve. But I'm sure Maci just cares that you love her, and I'm sure that as time goes by you too will begin to heal from that scary event!

Thanks for the responses. Time will tell :-)

My darling Elli was attacked by two very large dogs ... she held her own, but they got her in a couple places.  One place was her nose...the first picture is June when it happened...the second picture is August...nose as beautiful as ever...so there is hope for your furbaby too.  The nose pretty much heals on its' own.

Thanks so much for posting the pictures. So sorry your darling doodle was attacked.
Your puppies are so darn cute.

Thank-you for the compliment.  I am glad I had these pictures to share.  Elli looks like a little scamp with her nose "badge".  I was pretty distressed at the time and researched the nose...the dogs lick it and that helps with the healing.  Needless to say we are much relieved having no noticeable damage.  Your two are very very cute too.  Super pictures!  I always said  "Doodles are like potato chips...you can't have just one"  LOL
