Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I've searched the recommended foods and this forum for a substitute for my dog. When Acana discontinued Chicken and Potato, I went to Orijen Adult, however, he's having the same allergies that showed up before we found Chicken and Potato (black gue in the ears all the time). Chewy.com told me to go with Natural Balance, but they're not on the highly recommended list. I would like to find an Acana or Orijen food that is grain free, high quality, but limited ingredient with chicken as the protein source. I had no issues feeding this to my doodle. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Connie, I'm wondering why you want chicken as the protein source? The reason I ask is that there are very, very few LID foods made with chicken, and the reason for that is that chicken is commonly the protein source that causes the most problems in dogs. The reason for that is that chicken is the protein source they've eaten most often in their lives, and therefore, they're more likely to have developed an intolerance or allergy to it than to any other protein source.
Most LID foods contain less common proteins, or what we call "novel" proteins, because if a dog does have signs of food allergies, you feed them a protein source they've never had before. You can't be allergic to something you've never been exposed to.
My suggestion would be to try another LID food that contains a protein source that is "novel" for your dog. Any of the ones in the Acana Singles line would be a good choice, depending on what proteins he's had before.
There simple aren't any brands on our recommended list that make an LID food that contains chicken. :(
Another option you might consider is Wellness Simple Solutions Salmon/Potato or Turkey/Potato formulas. These have been very successful for many dogs here with food sensitivities.
OK, thank you so much! You've given me some options. I'll look at what is available and see what we can try.
what do you think of Acana Duck and Pear? At least it is not switching brands.
That's a good choice. The Acana Duck and Pear is one of the Acana Singles formulas I recommended above, and any of them would be a good choice.
I ordered that one. When I first learned about singles, I thought they were single serve packages and with a 70 lb dog, that would never work. I could have saved myself a ton of trouble if I did a little more digging. Hope this works for us! thanks again!
LOL, it's for "single protein". Let us know how it goes with the new food.
