LOL, thanks for the head's up, Stella!

Ha ha, I guess you do sometimes learn things on Facebook!!!

Only if you have smart friends on FB, and I'm guessing you would have posted it here eventually. :)

Hello All! I'm new to this forum and joined in hopes that you can help me? I am at a complete loss of what to do next regarding food for my goldendoodle puppy. He is a 6.5 months old, male, F1 standard goldendoodle. We got him at 8 weeks old and the breeder had him on Eukanuba - which he was fine on but had occasional diarrhea so we tried switching him to Blue Buffalo. Since then, it's been a nightmare. He had diarrhea for 2 weeks so we switched him back - no improvement. Went to chicken and rice which only helped a little. Tried taste of the wile (salmon) and no improvement. Tried pumpkin and probiotics (multiple kinds). I asked for advice from other goldendoodle owners who all were using Fromm so I switched him to that - still the constant diarrhea. In between all of this he has been checked for virtually everything by our vet. Stomach x-rays, blood test for giardia, Rx probiotics, antibiotics, etc. Everything has come back negative. He's a super active, happy healthy puppy I just can't get his stools normal and I feel terrible! I don't know what to do anymore so I started him back on chicken and rice two days ago. The vet says she wants to get him on prescription food but after reading this forum it appears that doesn't really work? I bought a bag of Nutri Source dog food (chicken and rice) on the recommendation of the person at the pet food store. ANY suggestions or advice are welcome as I'm desperate to make him feel better.

Alex, can you please copy and paste this into a new discussion here in The Food Group. We can help, but not as comments to an existing discussion.

The short answer is that he needs a grain-free LID formula from one of our recommended brands, like Wellness Simple Solutions and a better probiotic. But we need a separate discussion to really get into this.

Thank you! Just copied it into the main group!

Never mind, I see that you did. Will reply there. :)

Karen,

Hurley is going to get a brother in a few weeks.  Hurley is 5 and is on Fromm.

The breeder has recommended Natures Select High Protein Recipe for Dogs for the puppy.  I assume I will have to start the new puppy out on that food.  What do you think of that food?  If not that great what would you recommend and how soon can I start the transition?  She also recommends NaturVet's Digestive Enzymes plus Probiotic.  Is that one you recommend and if so, can I also give it to Hurley? Or is there a different one you would recommend.

Sidney, the new puppy will be 8 months old when we get him.

Thank you,

Diane

Well, the puppy has to stay on his current food for at least two weeks after coming home, but after that I would absolutely switch him. And you cannot buy the breeder's food anywhere except from the breeder. It's sold through one of those multilevel marketing schemes (otherwise known as a pyramid scheme), and the breeder makes a commission on it, which is why she recommends it, lol. I do not. :)

You will probably have to buy a couple of weeks worth of the food from the breeder, as you can't get it in any stores.
You also do not need nor want the digestive supplement. The probiotic it contains is very poor (not enough CFUs or strains of bacteria) and the digestive enzymes are worthless. A healthy dog should never need that type of product. If you want to give a probiotic anyway, order Proviable DC online.

After two weeks, assuming the puppy's stool is good and there are no digestive issues, you can switch him to whatever Fromm formula Hurley eats. At his age, he doesn't need puppy food.

Diane, some breeders who also sell food that you have to buy through them, will not honor any health guarantee if you don't purchase their food.  Check your health guarantee.  IMO, anyone who does that has NO intention of ever honoring that guarantee anyway, so it is worthless.  But do check it out.

PS Congratulations on getting a new puppy.

Karen,

I kept running into some challenges trying to respond.   I occasionally give Hurley a teaspoon of plain yogurt.  Is that okay or even necessary?

Thank you  for getting back to me so quickly.  I appreciate it and will only keep Sidney on the Natures Select for a brief time provided his digestive track is working normally.

You are great!!!
