Is it usual for a dog to not have to go to the bathroom as much as he gets older? Yeti is a year old (today!!!) and for the past couple weeks he has been so stubborn when it comes to going potty. We have had the same routine since we brought him home may 1st. Get up about 7 go out for potty come in to eat and back into his kennel while I get ready for work until his dad gets up and let's him / plays etc. Recently he has started to not go to the bathroom right away in the morning. I figure he has to go. He usually is in his kennel from 11-7. He always used to have to go. Every morning he at least would pee, a lot of times poop too and lately nothing. He sits down right next to me, and if I move to try to get him to go he gets right up walks over to me and sits or lays down again. He hardly ever sits by the door (his signal to us that he has to go out) lately. We haven't had any accidents in the house so I suppose it's okay, I just wonder if this is typical behavior.

Adult dogs do "go" less frequently than puppies; as puppies get older, their bladders get larger and they can "hold it" for a much longer time.

Jack is never ready to go outside first thing in the a.m.

Yes, lately I have noticed that Teddy (approaching 8 months) actually had his last potty call as early as 10:30 PM !! Even the 11:30 to Midnight trips were not bad because it meant I didn't have to go out on the usual 1:30 AM or 2 AM (have gone out as late as 2:45 am...UGH) calls.  It seems if he is resting, and had an active day (as measured by the FitBark), he's more likely to be done by 10-11 PM instead of 1-2 AM.

And like Karen's doodle Jack, at about 5 months Teddy no longer had the need to go out 1st thing in the morning.  It still sometimes happens, but it's not the Top Priority it was in the past when failure to get him out in 3 minutes led to an accident. Now, sometimes he doesn't hit his potty bells until 12:30 PM or 1 PM !

Interesting! I kinda suspected that was the case! Just wanted to make sure it wasn't abnormal. He is only pooping once a day. I hope that isn't too horrible.

I swear Myla has a bladder of steel!  She usually goes out around 9:30 pm and sometimes doesn't go outside until 12:30 pm - only if it's really snowing or raining - otherwise she goes out when we get up around 7:00 am and does her walkabout outside - making sure she is still in domain of her territory! We have found that if everything is "normal", Myla's schedule is normal but if something changes then so does her schedule.  Right now we are babysitting our grand dog for a week, so Myla's schedule will definitely change :)  Luckily, after a day or two, she will fall back in love with Karlos (our grand dog)!

I'm a very late-night person (or should I say Early-AM person !)....so I don't mind going out at 10:30 PM or 11:30 PM....but I am hoping Teddy can completely empty then so I can eliminate the 1 AM or 1:30 AM (or later) potty calls.

We used to have a great schedule going, but Yeti is slowly starting something new. Sometimes we have to walk him to get him to go to the bathroom. He isnt a big eater, however he has ALWAYS gone potty when we took him outside so its been a weird adjustment haha. Frank we are also first time dog owners so EVERYTHING is new to us :p

There are lots of times that we try to "make" Myla go potty - like when we're going on along car ride or when we're going in the kayak and know we won't be stopping for a while.  We always take her out and say "go pee" (our potty word) and if she won't go, we play "catch" with her.  It seems that after running around for a while, she has to go.  (I learned that on this website lol)  We only do this when we have to because I honestly believe that she knows what is going on and will deliberately thwart us!

Oh I totally understand that!! Sometimes when we get Yeti playing really good he has to go to the bathroom so we have been totally guilty of that trick as well! And I agree I think they do know. Yeti ALWAYS goes number 2 on a walk, even if he has just gone before we left the house. So if we really need him to go in a pinch we take him for a walk. On a normal walk he will go within a couple houses, however if we "need him to go now" he always waits. Hahaha he is such a goober

Haley, dogs/puppies are creatures of habit.  Take Yeti to the same areas and "sniffing" should trigger activity.

As I recall, Teddy was going 1st thing in the morning.....about 6-8 hours after going to bed/last potty call. Now, it's often -- not always, but often -- 10-12 hours.  As a general rule, if he goes out after 1 AM, he's usually OK until late morning or the other side of Noon.  If it's the rare time when he last goes out from 10-11:30 PM.....he's more likely to have to go right when we wake up, about 9 or 9:30 AM or so.  Especially if he did NOT do #2 with his late-night/early-AM potty call.

Yeah we encourage him to go to the same spots. Usually he would pee anywhere but he has 2 spots for poop. For some reason he just isn't going as much anymore. He doesn't seem to be in any physical pain or anything so I suppose excepting it is all I can do!

Yes, the #2 is much more "territorial" where he wants to do it on the same spots and/or similar areas (i.e., grass).

With #1, Teddy used to do it all at once but now he does marking....he'll do 2-3 seconds on a curb or stoop...a pole....tree stump...rocks....over another dog's stool....on a grass patch where he smells another dog's #1....etc.

It was alot easier when he was younger than 4 months and did it all at once (I can recall some #1 discharges that lasted 15 seconds !).  Now, the longest is 5 seconds and most are 2-3 seconds.  And many are nothing....and then a few minutes later he will have #1.  It can take 5-10 targets to completely drain him, between the "nothings" and the short bursts.

Makes a 3-minute potty call close to impossible, unless it's raining and he wants back in quickly.

Oh I know the struggle haha. Yeti loves being outside. We don't trust him out alone so one of us is always with him. All he wants to do is play. We are having very unseasonably warm weather here in WI so it's not too horrible but when temps were under 10 degrees even just a minute or two felt like 20 haha
