Pretty Yards

I am curious if anyone has a beautiful yard and either has their yard treated by one of the big companies or does it themselves. My yard looks okay, but it could be better. My brother is a grass guy and he says it's time to pretreat, but I've always been afraid to put any sort of chemicals on the grass because of the potential toxic effects to the dogs. I haven't really looked into it, but I just thought I would ask what everyone else does.

Fortunately, those of us east of the Rockies don't have foxtails. But if it was a choice between foxtails or weed killer, I'd have to go with the weed killers. Foxtails can be a greater danger to dogs.

Exactly!  And even with the spray, we are fighting them.  Hopefully by next year we will have them totally gone, but it is not going to be fun this year.

I'm pretty sure you can plant grass seed any time - you just want to make sure that it doesn't dry out before it germinates - I think spring is ideal because it's not that hot out, but we have a huge turf farm down the road and he plants even in the middle of summer, it just takes more water.  We have an acre in lawn and haven't used a weed killer for over six years but we definitely have to soon!  The plantain is taking over - every year we try to remove it manually but it's just too much.  We have decided to spray this year right before we leave for a camping trip so Myla isn't exposed.  DH retired March 1st of this year so we can finally pick a time that is ideal to spray and then leave.  I know it's not the best, but weeds taking over is also not ideal.  It's also a great idea to aerate the lawn every couple years, especially if it's really thick.  You can rent a machine to do that and it's not that expensive.  I love your mole story!  We have them often and we do have a trap as they can take over, as you say.  DH has a contest with a neighbour to see who gets the most! It's funny!
