Karen is right to let your Vet tell you whether a professional cleaning is in order. Mostly they have to sedate the dog and that is a big deal so it's not quite as easy as a human getting their teeth cleaned.
Haley ~ give the Virbac Veggie Dents a try. Beau has a sensitive stomach and some allergies and he loves the veggie dents. He has one a day and he has fantastic teeth.
I'm surprised Beau can tolerate the Veggie Dents with a sensitive stomach and allergies. They contain corn starch and corn cobs as well as soy protein and rice flour.
Your vet is the best judge of whether or not he needs professional cleaning.
My vet told me that when brushing their teeth, you can mainly focus on the outer surfaces, which are a lot easier to get at, lol. He said that's where most of the plaque and tartar accumulate. I think that makes it easier to do.
Thank you all so much! He is a tired pup right now so I'm going to use this as an opportunity to try his first brushing!
When I first tried to bush Belle's teeth with a doogy tooth brush we wound up with more toothpaste on my shirt and in my hair than on Belle's teeth. Then I got a flexible nubby thing that fits over my finger and I just put on the toothpaste and stick my hand in her mouth and massage away (and no she has never bitten me). I was worried this was too easy to be doing an adequate job, so I asked the vet to check her teeth, and he said they look "lovely." I don't know if anyone else uses this method, but it sure works for us.
Yes! I find the finger brushes easier to use, too!
I have one of those finger brushes too. I never tried the regular brush, seems it would be to hard to control.
