Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi,

Has anyone had any bad outcomes from treating their dogs ears yeast infections with Gentizol? I went to a vet today who looked into her ear with the magnifier/light tool to determine that her ear drum was OK. However when i came home and googled the anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drug, and a good amount of people report that deafness can occur--after one treatment-- or lead to vestibular dysfunction.

This dog forum and this golden retriever forum really scared me. I do not want to take a chance and wonder if i should clean her ear out with something else and stop treatment until I receive a different medication? Ella's hearing seems ok, but i do not like what i read.

Thoughts?

I see this is an old thread, but it has good timing for me. My old vet used mometavet for ear stuff. The active ingredients are:

gentamycin

mometasone - which is the corticosteroid in nasocort nose spray

clotrimazole - antifungal used for athlete's feet

So I would cheat and sometimes just use a little bit of hydrocortisone cream or clotrimazole cream on Katie's ears, but I was always hesitant because I don't want to hurt her and I'm not a vet. So when I saw new vet this week I told him I had used the hydrocortisone and clotrimazole he was very supportive of me continuing with that and adding a little bit of neosporin to the mix. Katie didn't have an active ear infection, just external irritation due to allergies. I'm very impressed with the improvement in only a couple days.

I love having good vet care, but I also appreciate being able to use a home remedy when it does the job. It never ceases to amaze me how many people bring their children to the emergency room so I can give them a dose of ibuprofen.

First I am NOT a Vet but this worked for us.
Chopper had a year long ear infection that several meds, ear washes and antibiotics could not clear up. The next move was to sedate him at the vet and have his ear cleaned out which I was not happy to do or thought would work. I went online to see what worked for other cronic infections (boric acid) and found this: https://www.amazon.com/pH-D-Feminine-Health-Support-Suppositories/d...
I figured if it was safe enough for lady parts it would probably be ok for Chopper's ear. I opened a capsule and mixed about half with an antibiotic ointment on a Q-tip then swabbed in his ear. I did it every other day for a week (3 times) and the infection and smell was gone! Never came back and there was no irritation. $25 solution for us when we had spent about $500 soon to be $1000 if we had him sedated. I mentioned to the vet what I used at his last checkup and she agreed it does work.

Good to know.
