Haley - I don't have any real words of wisdom for you, but just wanted to commiserate. I followed along with you talking about all Yeti's food group threads. My little Zoey could care less is she eats or not. I had never had a dog like this, so it was a bit alarming. She is a medium ALD and weighed 23#. The vet even told me she could stand to gain 5 lbs.
I did a lot of the same things you did - added toppers - tried different kibbles - cooked for her. I was lucky that she didn't have a sensitive stomach. She still wouldn't eat some mornings. After hearing over and over again that she wouldn't starve herself, I finally decided to stick with the one thing she usually ate all. I bit the bullet and started feeding her Stella & Chewys raw patties. At least I wasn't throwing out topped kibble! She still occ does not eat breakfast, but I just put her bowl in the frig until dinner.
Hope everything works out. I think I would love 2, but not the expense!! :^)
Our vet just told me Yeti could stand to gain 10 pounds!! Im confident that that will never happen haha. I suppose its better to be under weight than over weight though!
Common problem with people who feed their dogs Store bought food ......
Switch his/her food immediately to a real food diet.......home cooked at least once a day 2 or 3 times for puppies.....
I guarantee your dog will eat that food and start to gain weight and size and sleep better etc
Examples- fresh cook meals can be prepared in morning and left out for day, but they will eat it, guaranteed!
-----hamburger mix in little mixed veggies or chopped kale BBQ or fry in butter or cook in little water[ boil]
------ Chicken thighs, boil, and take off bone after cooked along with the skin....
--------must give dogs liver as well , dietary need for dogs....some Chicken livers or beef livers freid in butter
--------leave butter etc in with food, great for coats.....
-------- fish, grilled of fried some dogs love....
--------- some bacon or pork scrambled eggs are also ok for dogs.....
--------- if you want them to eat dried dog food, mix whole milk in that might help, but a long term store bought food diet will cause many problems down the road.......
----- how would you feel if you ate dry cereal 3 times a day for your life........you wont be healthy or happy thats for sure.......
----- I give my dogs whatever meat I cook for my family at night and make sure they get some liver each day or give them leftovers in am if I go out .....and I cook or grill [ retired ] in am .....hamburgers 5 or 6 times a week are fine......some liver at least every other day is needed......
----- store bought dog food is directly responsible for most dog disease/ illnesses etc unless its freshly prepared in cold section or raw
I'm glad this works for you and your dogs, but according to my knowledge and in my experience, the type of diet you are recommending could lead to acute pancreatitis. The fat levels are much too high, especially for a dog with a history of digestive problems like the OP's. There's no question that home-cooked diets can be wonderful for dogs, but they need to be much lower in fat and higher in several other essentials nutrients than what you have described.
I am wondering where you got the idea that liver is a "dietary need" for dogs, or that dogs can tolerate cow's milk; most can't. In fact I'm wondering where you got most of these ideas. Hopefully not from the same quack mercola website where you got the idea that dogs should never be neutered, lol.
The kinds of dry dog foods we recommend here are not "cereal"; in fact, most of them have no grains at all. And many of us here have dogs who have lived to be 15+ years old on "store bought" diets, so it's false to say that "a long term store bought food diet will cause many problems down the road"
And it's absolutely absurd to say that "store bought dog food is directly responsible for most dog disease/ illnesses ". There is simply no fact based evidence to support that.
Thank you everyone for your kind words! It has now been over a week and Phin seems to be eating a little more and more everyday. Less than a week until we are switching him to wellness and I cant wait!!!
