I normally bathe my pup myself but I took him to the groomer the other day for a bath. It was just for a bath but apparently they also expressed his anal glands. Ever since he has gotten back he will sit randomly (at unusual times for his normal behavior) and scoots. There is no discharge or smell when he scoots. He also didn't scoot or lick his behind before going to the groomer. It seems that he likes to scoot outside more, maybe because the ground is cold outside?
Is this normal soreness or should I take him to the vet? It has been 3 days since he has been back from the groomer.

That's too bad.  Do you have his glands expressed every time you have him groomed?  I used to do that, but after reading up on the controversy behind the practice, I quit having them done and they have had no problems.  Their diet is good and their poo is formed.

The vet may have a spray that can quiet the itching/discomfort down.  Poor sweetie.

well I didn't realize they were doing it every time. I also don't need to take him often because he sheds, doesn't really mat, I usually just bathe him at home and trim his face myself. I was just being lazy and took him to the groomer :(

Mine usually scoot when their anal glands are full and I get a vet tech appointment to have them expressed.  I don't let my groomer do it.  It might be because they irritated that area when they did the "sanitary trim" and he's scooting because it's bothering him.  If it continues I'd have the vet take a look.

If it is more of a 'burn' where the sanitary trim was done, applying baby power/talc soothes the area.

Sounds very much like an anal gland problem to me.  When my dogs do that, I express their anal gland and it seems to stop.   My dogs like to scoot on the rug - UGH.  But learn how to express the anal gland yourself (it is actually very easy) and tell the groomer that you take care of that yourself.  Anyway, that would be my suggestion.  Probably just a little clot left in the anal gland and it is bothering him.

My vet told me that the muscle that controls the anal glands gets irritated when it is expressed (groomers usually do it exteriorly compared to the vet who does it internally) and it will/can cause them to do the scoots for up to two weeks. My groomer won't express any of his clients and recommends that if you need to have it done to have your vet do it as they know what they are doing. I always told Henry's former groomer to not express him...the time she "forgot" he was miserable and did the scooting thing for almost a week. Hence, new groomer.

My dog also bum scoots on the carpet too. I used to take her to the vet to get her anal glands internally expressed, then I had him show me how to do it. It's very easy and she doesn't mind it at all, she looks at me over her shoulder, and I envision her rolling her eyes at me, lol. It varies on how often she needs it, maybe monthly or less. I only do it when she's scooting regularly, I don't want to do it too often.
