Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I've done my research and have narrowed down my choices in pet insurance. We have a 7 month old rescue who I'd love to start off with some kind of insurance. Learned our lesson big time with Grover, who we lost almost a month ago. I'm pretty much making car payment size monthly payments for our bill :(
Anyway, I would love to hear any feedback on plans. Most specifically.....what the ideal options might be. Do I add an RX plan? Is there an ideal maximum payout and deductible? Is the wellness option worth the cost? Thinking others that have used it will have some valuable advice.
Currently I'm leaning towards Embrace. My brother in law is pushing Nationwide, but I don't like the pay schedules. I'm still open to others though.
Thanks for any and all experiences...positive and negative!!

thank you for your input! It really helps to hear about other's experiences!
It does seem odd.
I think I'll call and ask. I don't like the idea of playing games with the premium. It feels like Amazon when you leave something in the cart and the price goes down. I know they do give discounts, but that was already factored in yesterday.
Let us know what they say. I hope I got the best rate! It does seem odd and amazon-like that it would change like that.
It was my AAA discount which hadn't gone through when I applied it the day before. Huh.
One thing I would check if I bought pet insurance again- the rate for older dogs. It seems the rates go up dramatically after the dog is 7 or 8 years old, some plans more than others. By that time you may have pre-existing conditions that prevent switching plans.
Good point. I did check on rates for a plan for Scrappy, so their premiums seem on par with other companies. $40 to $60 per month depending on coverage.
So, ultimately I decided to go with Healthy Paws. I chose to do the 90% with $250. I thought long and hard about it and since we're having to pay out so much to Care Credit to pay off Grover's bill, the extra $6 per month would be worth the extra 10% payout if something were to come up in the next couple of years. I hope to be able to decrease later.
My decision was also based on the fact that I don't know Sully that well yet. I was lucky/spoiled with both Scrappy and Grover. I have a feeling that Sully enjoys ingesting foreign objects. Once I get to know him, I'll be able to relax a bit, but I'm still spooked by the way the emergency costs added up so quickly with Grover.
Fingers crossed that we won't have to use the coverage, but if so, I feel good with this decision. Now......if only I can make it through the 15 day wait period for accidents and emergencies, lol. I'm watching him closer than you all can imagine, lol. Because that would be our luck!
I feel like I could have written most of this myself. Everything you've said feels so familiar. I hope neither one of us ever needs this insurance, but if we do I hope it lives up to all of our expectations for it.
Also, please don't eat weird things Sully! It stresses everyone out!
lol, he's a poop eater too......but that's digestible. If that;s the worst, we're fortunate! He actually likes to nibble the walls though.
Mary, your post feels familiar to me, too. I think you've made a good decision.
