Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello everyone! I am a mom of a 5 month old goldendoodle Lucy who is the love of my life. She is my first doodle and I have always had shelter dogs. Since we got Lucy she has bouts of diarrhea every 3 weeks-ish. I can’t find a cause except for a sensitive stomach. Vet has her on Royal Canin High Energy GI wet dog food but I am looking for a dry kibble that is good for her. I can keep her on this but wanted to see what other pet owners had their dogs on. Dog food is so confusing I am trying to figure out the best food for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. She has been on Wellness Complete puppy and Diamond large breed puppy (from the breeder).

Hi Amy,
We have a very large active group here on DK called The Food Group, where we have lists of recommended food and treats and dozens of discussions about every aspect of feeding our dogs. Please join us there and we will be happy to help you select a new food.
One thing you will learn in TFG is that Rx food is overpriced garbage, lol, so you are right to want to change it. Dogs with sensitive stomachs usually do best on a limited ingredient (LID) grain free diet, and we can help you choose one.
One question: has your pup been on metronidazole for the stomach issues? If so, did you also give a probiotic? If not, that could be the cause of the diarrhea. I would suggest that before you change foods, you order some Proviable DC online (it's not available in stores) and use that for a week or two before you switch foods.

Only on metronidazole once in December.  I just ordered the probiotic. Is it safe to take everyday? Safe for her age and how long do I keep her on it?

It is perfectly safe. I would use it for a month, a week or so before you transition and then continue it through the transition. It really makes a huge difference.
