When Owen was a pup... not sure how old but I am thinking around 6 months... he was soo stinky! It was like he had B.O. It wasn't his breath or something he had rolled in. It was persistent and wouldn't wash out. Fast forward 7 years. My vet confirmed that there is some evidence that grain-free food may contribute to some heart conditions. I thought I would add a grain food half time to our doodles' diet. I used the same company, Wellness. In a short time Owen was stinky again. I finally put two and two together. He must have some kind of allergy or sensitivity to grains! I took him off the grain food and no more stinky doodle. I don't remember when we switched to grain-free food, but I am assuming that Owen stopped stinking then and I just didn't figure it out.
I'm mentioning this here in case someone else is having a stinky doodle issue. This has no effect on our other doodle...just Owen.

Witgh all due respect to your vet, the Morris Foundation's study on the relationship between diet and increased incidence of cardiomyopathy in dogs did not point to a grain free diet, despite the many rumors to the contrary. We recently had a discussion here about this:

If you think about it logically, the addition of grains to dogs' diets is a relatively recent phenomena; for hundreds (actually thousands) of years, dogs ate grain free diets without developing heart disease. :)
Thanks so much for your input Karen. I will continue using grain-free food because I can't stand that stench Owen was emitting. I think it is odd that the vet was so adamant about the "research" showing a correlation. With the many health issues our daughter endures, I am not one to take everything a medical professional says as irrefutable. I wasn't going to ever go back to a full diet of grain-containing food, I thought it wouldn't hurt to add some back into their diet. I was wrong.
That is quite interesting that grained food seemed to make Iwen stinky. But if some grains disagreed with him, it could cause a sour stomach or stinky breath that permeated his whole self. It makes sense.
Thanks Nancy. Stinkosis!
Very interesting. Glad Owen is back to smelling sweet.
Thanks! I LOVE Kona’s smell so when Owen was reeking it was very bad. I’m spoiled with the doodles
I hope Owen & Kona doesn't see this post, they would probably disagree with the "stinky" adjective. In fact Kona probably rather enjoyed Owen's unique smell.
Ha ha.
