Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

HI All! After months of trying to figure out what was wrong with our little golden doodle, we finally realized she has a huge sensitivity to chicken. She was having diarrhea and soft stools for months and now that we have eliminated chicken, after many trial and errors, her stools have been so much better!

We are trying to find a food that has no chicken in it but that is also appetizing. We are finding that many foods have "animal fat" which could contain chicken so we are trying to avoid.

I would love some recommendations on yummy, healthy, and good food without chicken, chicken fat for our little dood. Currently we are on a very basic food, LID, but she doesn't seem to care for it.

I tried to do a search here but couldn't find any relating, happy to look at other posts if there are any similar!

TIA!

Hi, Bethany,  My Busby also is allergic to chicken. We've been feeding him Acana Wild Atlantic for years and he's doing beautifully.  He loves it and has had no ill-effects at all.  Good luck in your search

Thank you! I will look into that!

**Noting that this is probably not an actual allergy, but food sensitivity! No itchiness or issues with skin, but DEFINITELY a huge sensitivity.

LOL, I was just commenting on that below.

Hi Bethany, I'm a little confused.

If you have eliminated chicken and her stools haven't been better, then chicken is not the problem. Otherwise, if chicken was the problem, and you eliminated it, that would have solved the issue.
It's also important to know that soft stools, diarrhea, and other digestive issues are not symptoms of allergies, but rather of a possible food intolerance. There is a BIG difference. Here is some good info: https://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/facts-about-food-allergie...;

But at any rate, there are tons and tons of great foods on our recommended list that don;t contain chicken.
How old is your dog?

Oh, and which LID food is she currently eating? Some are better than others.

Hi! Ever since we eliminated chicken her stools have been great!  Sorry for the confusion not sure if I can edit my original post! We are giving her the sweet potato and venison LID, adult. She hasn't really been eating it though. But will eat other treats and it does seem like she is hungry.

She will be one year tomorrow, 18 pounds!

We went through our pet store and there were only a few good food options that didn't have animal fat. It is also hard to know which ones are healthy for her AND not have the fat/chicken.

You can edit your post. Up near the top of your discussion, there's a box that says Options. Click the drop down arrow and it will give you the option to Edit Discussion.
You don;t give a brand, but it sounds like you're feeding Natural Balance. That brand is not very good and has been removed from our recommended list some time ago. it has a very low protein content, and I'm not surprised she doesn't like it.
My suggestion would be Wellness Simple Solutions. There are 4 formulas, none containing chicken. They are all single protein foods and most dogs do great on them. My favorites are the Salmon & Potato formula and the Turkey and Potato formula, but there is also Duck or Lamb with Oatmeal. Most dogs do great with it, and I can almost guarantee she will like it better than the Natural Balance.

Oh, and none of the brands on our recommended list contain "animal fat" or any unnamed ingredient. All fats are named specifically so you can be sure there is no chicken.

Yes, natural balance, sorry again!

Great. Thank you SO much. I will take a look at the brand list and check out of Wellness Simple Solutions.

I really appreciate the help!

We had to stop giving our pup poultry when he was about 8 months. We use Earthborne Holistic and really like their non-chicken options. We rotate between their fish version (Coastal Catch), bison, and now lamb (which is new to him and he really enjoyed that).
