My Maggie (golden doodle) was spayed on Wednesday (she’s 7 mos) and I realize it was only a few days ago, but I just feel something's off. She is eating and drinking some again, but she acts so weird....at first she didn’t want to walk...she’d walk a few steps and immediately go for her stitches or plop down on the ground. Now she will walk more (and has her pep back), but the weird part is she will be totally calm and then Twitch or jerk (kind of  like someone poked her with a pin) and she freaks out and goes for her stitches. I’ve taken her to the vet twice.  Thursday (the very next morning) and then again yesterday, ,and they assure me everything is ok, that they think she has anxiety (so, they gave her ACE, an anti-anxiety medication.  She’s already on Tramadol for pain and Meloxidyl, an anti-inflammatory.  I hate to add more drugs to the mix, but it also breaks my heart to see her when she has her weird freak outs. So, we gave her half a pill along with the Tramadol and Meloxidyl and it didn't seem to do much of anything.  Nothing seems to work to settle her down when she gets worked up. She also pants a lot and breaths fast.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I called the vet again today and here's what she has suggested (stop the Tramadol in case it's a side effect of that med) and increase the ACE tab to one whole pill.  Still give the anti-inflamatory.  If that doesn't work then she gave me a different antianxieity med to try tomorrow when this one's out of her system.  I really don't like all these medications.  I also hate seeing her like this.  She had an exploratory surgery at 4mos (long story), and she did NOT act like this. It’s very strange.  I just feel something is off.  I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this?  Thanks!

Mel and Joy are wonderful dog owners. I would trust that if they take their kids there it's a good place.

Also, my vet was impressed that they had done the 4dx heart worm test. I guess that's the fancy one.

Thank you both for the info!  O’Fallon is far from me, but Creve Couer happens to be right up the road.   Again, I really appreciate your help!  And good news...today was a good day for Mags!  ;-).  Thanks again!

Tara

I just got another recommendation for Creve Coeur from a DRC volunteer who uses them.

It makes me really anxious to even think about complications after spaying. You've gotten good advice here (we always do!) But I just wanted to say kudos for listening to your gut. You should always do that. No vet is right 100% of the time, and if something feels wrong don't let them blow you off.

I hope your Maggie is doing better today!

Karen/Stacy...thank you both again for your new vet recommendation!  Maggie's one year appointment is in December and she will be going to Creve Coeur.  But I also wanted to update you (and this post in case anyone uses it as a resource), as to what was going on with Maggie after her spay.  About a month later, I was petting her belly and noticed a bump or lump where the incision had been...it was bulging and weird, so of course I took her to the vet first thing.  It turns out they think she had an allergic reaction to her internal stitches.  They used Vicryl.  They put her on an antibiotic and it all cleared up and she seems to be completely fine now.  So, it turns out I wasn't crazy...there was something wrong with her (not that I'm happy about that, but I just knew something was off).  Anyway...just wanted to update the post and thanks again for all your help! ;)

Glad all is fine now. Thank you for the update!
I think you'll be happy with the new vet.

I'm so glad to hear that Maggie is doing well, and I hope you like the new vet! I know they give discounts to foster dogs too. Always a plus.
