I am interested in this also.
Does Charly get chew toys or bones (either raw bones or large beef bones)? The act of chewing "brushes" their teeth for them & not only makes their teeth healthy but also freshens their breath. We give Oski raw buffalo bones in the summer which he chews outside on the lawn (too yucky for inside the house!) & in the winter/fall (it's really wet & muddy here in Portland) he only gets his CET dog chews--they're strips of beefhide that are coated with enzymes to reduce plaque & break up tartar (primary dried yeast & glucose oxidase from Aspergillus niger). Theoretically you should brush your dog's teeth as well with dog toothpaste but despite how easy going Oski is, I could never get him to do that--he tries to chew the toothbrush, LOL

thank you ann!! i will look into all these things!! i'm sure something is bound to work! do you know what the cookies are called? that you use?
Give them lots of things to chew on to keep their teeth clean.
Bones etc to chew on and BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH the teeth.
when you guys say chew toys do you mean like plastic toys, or bones, or things specifically for the teeth.. cause she has plenty chew toys, but mostly like stuffed animals.. no many hard chewable things... well DUHH i just caught myself... stuffed animals and squeeky toys wont clean her teeth! LOL her teeth are very very white and clean!! i will go buy some teeth brushing supplies this weekend.. and anyone have any favorite dental chew toys??
I have noticed certain foods affected my smaller doodles breath, and when I changed his food it became normal. Canidea dog food made his breath smell, but a couple of the others he has been on, we have had no problem at all, its something to look into.
I think in some cases it is an odor from the digestive tract not from the teeth. Again possibly from the food they are eating. Nothing helped my Riley doodle until I changed his food. Its worth a try!
We give our dogs Puper Mint Bones or lil Monster Pork Bones....................they love them!!http://www.strictlypetsupplies.com/productshow.php?searchword=pup+r...
Woof! I agree with the previous posters regarding hard bone treats and tooth brushing. My vet recommended the brushing when Jennings was about 4 months old, and once he got used to it, he now looks forward to having his teeth brushed with his poultry-flavored paste! It sounds gross, but he sits right down and wags his tail when he sees the toothbrush. Also, I just ordered some mint biscuits from the Drs Foster & Smith catalog, and they seem to be helping on the days of stinky breath.
I agree with the others...although I lean strongly toward the food causing it. I did not notice any problem with my dogs' breath until I switched foods...so, my question is to those of you with no dog-breath problem...what kibble do you feed?

I appreciate the comments about the charcoal cookies because I do believe that it is more of an internal thing...my dogs have GORGEOUS teeth!

But, speaking teeth...we have several dogs (we are breeders) and all of our dogs from "championship" lines have stunning, white teeth...but we have one girl from hunting lines with bad teeth...what I am thinking (only a guess here) is that championship/show quality dogs are bred to have beautiful teeth...whereas those bred for hunting, it doesn't matter about their teeth so much...at least not appearance...

All of our dogs eat the same, so this is the only study I have on it...but it makes sense.

I also believe that big, raw bones are the BEST for teeth cleaning! We give chewies and our dogs love them, but after raw bones, their teeth sparkle and they have fresh breath.
