I have a dumb question, and I think I know the answer, but thought I'd throw it out there. Maggie is on the most expensive dog food of any dog I've ever had (Nature's Variety Raw Instinct for reference) and she has the stinkiest doggy toots of any dog I've ever had! She has high quality poops and is all lean muscle and seems otherwise completely healthy.

Are there any health implications with her gas? Is it the high protein that's causing this? Is there any reason to consider switching her food to something else?

It's certainly not the end of the world, but sometimes I look at her and think, what on earth is wrong with you?

I do know it's irrational - and I do many things that are much grosser than touching a nice steak without batting an eye. It's an excuse and I've been full of them. It's time to do different things. I've gotten away with eating fast food for longer than I deserve. It's time for new and improved. I also need to join a gym, but I'm procrastinating!

One thing at a time.

I like that philosophy!

Some of those high end dog foods are like rocket fuel for farts LOL. I'm a dog food snob and I dont take changing foods lightly. I research my brains out for days before I make a change. Several years ago we made a change and absolutely could not deal with the lung burners. Good luck to you! (My pack gets Greek yogurt at morning and night feedings, not sure it will resolve your issue but it's a great healthy practice). Have you tried another protein formula? Same brand, not beef maybe?

Seriously! If there was anyone here besides me she would clear the room - and sometimes I think about leaving. And sometimes she gets up and walks away! I was thinking I might open the probiotic capsule and mix it with the yogurt too. Can't hurt, right? Might help.

I haven't tried a different protein. Her sister eats chicken and doesn't do that - maybe I should try it. There are also duck, venison, and lamb formulas. I'm a simple eater, and I sort of think those are exotic proteins, so I haven't really considered trying them. Though if it helped her stop crop dusting the house I might reconsider. It's a minor thing, really. But it is some pungent gas!

Just a quick update to this. Maggie has been getting yogurt and a daily Proviable on her food for a month now, and I do think it's helped with her gas. I haven't been blown away by stinky toots in a while (now that I've said this, we all know what will happen!) She's also historically had soft stools the day she comes home from the groomer, I assume from stress, or maybe they're giving her too many treats there I don't know. But that didn't happen this time. I was a believer before, but now I'm a true believer. The probiotic can only help.

Yep. After seeing what a good probiotic has done for so many dogs here, and what it did for JD, I swear by probiotics. They are not a magic cure for everything, but they sure make a difference with digestive issues.
