Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I'm following the great discussion here on Taurine deficiency, but had to ask how many of us have witnessed the complete panic on FB? I know I can't be the only one assuming that someone has an agenda....to see millions switching over to "the 5 Big Companies" that just happen to be in line with each other?  My head is going to explode.  I came here knowing there would be sensible reason and I've tried directing many other worried dog owners here.  That one huge group is so one sided, sensored and in your face. Just wow.

My issue is that I need chicken free.  I have three doodles, at 3 different stages.  I usually end up with 3 diets.  I just switched to Zignature again and was very happy until the posts on FB....even in the doodle groups now, started screwing with my common sense.  Someone here please assure me I'm not killing my babies slowly.  Why must Pro Plan be the answer???  And Royal Canin is confusing and expensive.  Hills???  Seems like we've gone back 15 years with that choice.  Eukanuba and Iams…..sugar coated cereal.

Has anyone seen the chart they have that they do not want posted outside the group? Am I the only one in there that's suspicious? If they claim to be helping dogs, why not post everywhere they can to spread the word?

Just thank you all for being here.

I know that in my FB Poodle groups, every time the subject of food is mentioned, someone pops up with some inaccurate statement like "grain free foods are causing dogs to die from DCM" and a link to the group.

yup, causing panic and confusion.  I've been trying to post links to DK Food Group when I see this.  I can't imagine being a brand new dog owner and seeing that.  It's just wrong.

It won;t do you any good, Mary. Even I have stopped trying to post info. They are on a mission and will not listen.

Oh, and for those who are wondering what the word is that got deleted in Mary's post, it's HighJack with an "ING" after it. Strange that would be censored, lol.

Okay, at the risk of being taken away by the Purina agenda police, I'm sharing it here.  I've never been politically correct and  I stand by this sharing in the name of "helping"  ALL the other dogs they haven't reached yet.

See, that's fascinating to me because I think it illustrates my point - those numbers are tiny. And skewed, because people with healthy dogs don't routinely have echocardiograms. Plus, I think the people who buy the most expensive foods (Acana) are more likely to seek advanced medical treatment for their pets than people who feed grocery store junk. Which seems to be played out by the number of dogs tested on the more expensive foods. This looks like really bad data to me. But if people don't understand it they could think that it's simple cause and effect without looking at any other variables.

great points.  I also think that someone is making loads of money off of all the unnecessary electrocardiograms that people are now insisting on. I trust my vet and know that with regular pet care, he can catch anything that needs further care.  He has in the past and I'm comfortable with that.  People see this chart and it's not what it appears.  Besides the fact that it makes Purina and the other big companies look healthy.  So sad.

And this is all self reported. Meaning there is no way to show or prove accuracy.

So, owner reported and ridiculous. There have been 326 documented cases of taurine deficient DCM in the entire USA. It is flat out impossible for this chart to be accurate or true.
In addition, 99.9999999999% of all cases of DCM in dogs are completely unrelated to food. DCM is a genetic disease. http://cidd.discoveryspace.ca/disorder/dilated-cardiomyopathy.html

I strongly urge anyone who is interested in the subject of pet food companies influencing veterinarians to read Chapter 24 of Marion Nestle's book "Feed Your Pet Right". The chapter entitled "Do Pet Food Companies Influence Veterinarians?"

My vet is wonderful, but has indeed been suggesting grocery store brand dog food for convenience.  He's semi retired now, but the new doctors there still suggest Purina.  Vets are great for SOME things. Just not reliable on food suggestions. LOL.

My vet and I agreed long ago not to discuss food brands.
