Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello! I have put a deposit down on an upcoming litter for an F2B goldendoodle. Mom is an F1 English cream goldendoodle. Dad is an F1B. Both are absolutely beautiful! I have he 6th pick so options will be quite narrow. I currently have a female doodle. She is friendly and enjoys playing with other dogs. I’ve had 2 female dogs for years until we lost our 16 year old dachshund last week. In my experience there always seemed to be one girl that didn’t really like the other or not have any interest in playing with the other. . We never really had to worry about them fighting although one would occasionally snap at the other. I’m considering a male pup this time, Is it true that males and females are more likely to get along? I have heard that 2 females are more likely to have conflict. I understand that finding a submissive vs dominant pup is also a factor.

Also, any tips for coat  selection for better possibility of low to non-shed? I know this can be hard to predict when they are so young. I have attaches a pic of the beautiful parents ❤️

I read that as well.  However, we had two females and there was never an issue.  My Kirby was almost 8 years old when I got Khloe.  They got along well.  When Kirby got sick of Khloe she would just snap or go in her crate.  A few times Kirby put her paw down t on Khloe to calm  her but never any bitter fights.  They loved each other  a lot. Both shared our attention and affection equally.  I heard that same sexes don't get along but that wasn't my experience at all.

So the puppies were born. There were 4 boys. I will have the 3rd pick of those 4. The breeder did tell me they tested the sire and he carries both genes for furnishings and curl so they are expecting wavy to curly coats. In pictures I did notice crimping on 2 of the boys heads so looks like at least 2 curly guys for sure! The site is a very curly F1B. Such beautiful parents!!

Many open-faced doodles (those without facial furnishings, who look more retriever-ish) will have very crimped ears and heads, so that in itself doesn't mean the dog will be curly. You can have a flat coated doodle with crimped ears and curls on the head. You can also have a curly body and an open face. What you want to look for as the pups get older is a "chrysanthemum" of fur between the eyes and around the muzzle.

Can this happen despite the DNA testing?

I think so. It happens with F1 and F1Bs, and in those cases, the Poodle parent always has two copies of the genes for furnishings, curl and length, no testing required, lol.

Good point :)

Here are 4 week pictures of the boys! I love the darker curlier ones but since I am 3rd out of 4th pick I’m not getting my hopes up. I will meet them in 2 days... they will be 5 weeks then! I’ve read other discussions regarding temperament and submissive vs. dominant that were very helpful!  Any tips or thoughts on coat types? I think they all have furnishings... even the straighter ones!

One more picture! I think I see furnishings here...

The last photo you posted actually has the most obvious furnishings.

Sometimes, the dogs with very curly heads and curly, crimped-looking ears end up open-faced, so don't look at the curliness of the coats, particularly not the heads or ears.

Very curly coats as puppies can also equal nightmares to groom and maintain as adults. The coat will usually get curlier and woolier as a pup/dog gets older.

If I were choosing from this litter based solely on these photos, I'd choose one of the lighter colored ones, probably the last one.

Look at your Penny's 4 week old photo. Pretty straight coat, right? And look at her now!

I'm partial to the same 2 puppies as you, but I think I might give a slight advantage to the first one. It might just be camera angle, but he looks sort of roly poly and cuddly. Of course you would have to meet them. I'm finding myself kind of partial to the less curly look these days. Just like we were talking about earlier. The curlier they are the more coat maintenance they require.

I like the lighter two as well.
