My turn to ask for advice. :)
Jasper's digestive system has gotten a little bit "off" the past few weeks. I'm chalking it up to new and different treats, and too many of them; the treats were being dispensed very liberally during the weeks leading up to his CGC test, lol. Nothing major, but I decided that probiotics would probably help.

I ordered Proviable and started it the other day. But I can't figure out the best way to give it to him. They're called "sprinkle capsules", so I assumed that you just open them and sprinkle over the dog's food. Which would work well I imagine if the food is wet. But sprinkling the contents of the capsule over kibble seems to result in most of the probiotic powder lying on the bottom of the food bowl after he's done eating.
What am I doing wrong? Any tips?
I really do not want to give him any canned food or peanut butter, and while I'm very good at "pilling" dogs, i.e. putting it down their throats, I hate to have to start doing that when this isn't medication and he's not sick.

He doesn't really inhale them, but I think he'll get the Proviable before it hits the bottom of the bowl, lol.
Going to try it now. I'll report back.

No go. He wouldn't eat his food at all. I guess the Proviable ruined the appeal of the Stella & Chewy's, because he's eaten it when I put the Proviable on top of the kibble and then added the S & C.
Sigh.
Anyone want to buy 77 Proviable capsules cheap?

Darn, it was worth a try.

Well, short of doing some of the water/peanut butter etc. shenanigans I guess Proviable is just off the menu :p

If he really needed it, I wouldn't hesitate to get it into him by any means necessary.

With all the chewable meds and prevents they make for dogs these days, why hasn't someone made a chewable probiotic? They make them for humans.

I've tried the sprinkle on the kibble trick and it hasn't worked for me either.  I get it if you hate peanut butter. I feel that way about Mayo - and that's for humans (my kids grew up thinking they hated mayo too :-})  However, peanut butter or yogurt is what I use.  Since mine get pretty much nothing but their kibble or a whimzee, they think peanut butter or yogurt are wonderful treats. even Mr. Picky himself. Just a suggestion (I haven't checked out what the sugar or salt content are) the canned cheese for nachos or the squirt cheese. Another thought is if you quite doing toppers on his kibble then reintroduce yogurt it might work.  PS - yes it is peanut butter or yogurt, but I put it in a tablespoon with the sprinkle and let the boys lick it off.  You could do something like that perhaps - presentation is everything. Hahahahaha

I love his toppers almost as much as he does, lol. I'm never giving them up, unless I switch him over to just Stella & Chewy's and after I got my property tax reassment yesterday, that will not be happening for a while.

I'm going to wait and see if my vet can get me the chewable Proviable tablets.

Karen - which Stella and Chewy topper are you using? Is it the meal mixers? There are meal mixers and meal mixers superblends. And which protein source? Too many options!

Thanks!

I get the regular Meal Mixers. I've tried Chicken, Beef, and Lamb. Jasper likes the beef best (it's his favorite protein) but he also likes the lamb. Chicken not as much, but he will eat it.

Thanks, I'm going to give it a try and see if Maggie likes it. She's just not that excited about food. She's a perfectly good weight, so she eats enough but I wish she would just eat like the other girls do. I have to guard her bowl for her.

Repeat after me: It's not such a good thing to be excited about food. For dogs or for people. LOL

No it is not good... garbage disposal dogs are 100% trouble and Riley is a prime example.  Thankfully she doesn't hoover her kibble but she'd probably eat her whole daily 3.75 cups at a sitting if I'd let her.... then she'd explore the kitchen hunting for freebies.  She's so darn TALL too it's hard to keep things out of reach since she can "fish" for things with her paws that are pushed all the way to the back of the counter.

My kitchen stays pretty clean though because it has to! lol.

I put the whole unopened capsule in the dish of kibble and they eat it like it's kibble! It doesn't have a taste, so there is no problem with them spitting it out. :-)
