OK. So my 9 1/2 month old puppy is displaying this odd behavior. He jumps up to grab the leash and then wants to play tug of war with it. If I don't let him, he starts jumping up on me and nipping at my clothers. Any ideas what he is trying to say? And how best to stop the behavior?

Thanks Amanda. I think you are correct. He does it when he doesn't want to go in. Even after an hour or so walk. I once dropped the leash to see what he would do. He grabbed it and ran to a patch of grass and lied down in the middle. I will try the time out thing. He has been a bit crazy lately. He has giardia so he hasn't been able to go to daycare or play with other dogs for over 2 weeks now. He has energy to burn. I can't wait until he is better so I can get him to daycare
At the dog shelter I volunteer, we give these guys with leash biting habits a rope toy to carry while outing. They have something to play with, and something in their mouth, naturally, no leash biting.
You are not alone. My 7 month goldendoodle Cody (maybe it's the name) has always done this. I haven't been able to solve it yet. So I'll take any advice as well. Traffic seems to set him off at times. It's weird, we can be having a good walk when all of a sudden he looks up at me and bam, he starts jumping at the leash, pulling it growling, and jumping at me. As a result I don't walk him far from my house as I don't trust his behavior. He is an angel otherwise. I do find that after a visit to the Dog Park I can walk him better.
Benny has the same problem as well. He is now 9 months and I think it started when he was around 5 months. Usually he only does it when we go out and stops with it after we have reached the park. I always stop walking and tell him to leave it. He used to jump on me then but I just turn around. He has realized now that we don't walk any further if he doesn't stop. As soon as we start walking again he graps it again. A nightmare, especially in obediance class where he needs to heel and then starts playing with the leash. Treats to distract him didn't work until I discovered dog sausages. He loves them and if I hide a little bit in my hand he will keep his nose at my hand and he does the heel command perfectly.
Another tip fom our trainer was to use 2 leashes. As soon as he graps one leash drop it and use the other one. If he graps this one again change to the other leash. It is a bit exhausting but it works as he looses interest if he cannot pull anymore.
If someone finds the ultimate solution just let me know :)
