So I took Jake to the groomers today. He was so matted that they had to shave him almost right down to the skin. He looks like an entirely different dog. However he was severely matted. The groomer said that it was like shearing a sheep. She had to cut a line down the middle of the fur and shear the rest off. It came off in almost one piece. The thing is I do brush him!! Honestly!!! I swear the matting happened over one week. I tried a number of different things, matting comb, bath, conditioner and combing when wet, nothing worked!!! I hope this is a one time thing because he his coat is transitioning. Has anyone else experienced this quick all over matting? Is it a problem that repeats?

Wow, looks like a different dog now!
I never brush Cassie, she doesn't seem to like it, and I give her a bath once a week, so hopefully she won't start matting. We haven't had the first grooming yet - had an appointment for before Christmas, but the groomer had to cancel because of the snow... can't wait to see what she'll look like after her first grooming!

Good luck with the matting problem!
Same thing here
Same thing here - Buddy went to the groomers yesterday and came home a different dog. I too brush and comb regularly, and those mats just came out of nowhere and multiply like rabbits! I am guessing he's going through his coat transition and that's what made it so bad. I am little peeved with the groomers though .... I took him in on Thursday for a FFF and bath - AFTER I had gotten about 75 % of his mats worked out. They charged me extra b/c he still had some mats. Okay, no problem, I understand. The next day, more mats. I wonder if they rinsed well enough??? And 48 hours later, he was more matted than when I originally took him. Literally 48 hours later. So Monday, I go back, show them all the mats and let them talk me into a shave down for this transition period. What ticks me off is that I paid $70 on Thursday, and yesterday for the shave down, they charged me another $60.

I almost cried when I picked him up, but let me say that he thinks he is Rodeo Cool. Head and tail held high, prancing around like a movie star. He feels like silk! So while me and DH don't care for the cut, Buddy clearly loves it. It has to be so much more comfortable for him, and I know he was tired of me constantly combing and brushing working on those mats. It's stressful and painful for the dog and for me! I am just wondering how long it will take for his coat to grow out again? Here are before and after pics ... see how proud he looks in the after!
