I used a furminator on my 12 week old doodle and got her hair too thin on her back. Does anyone know how long it might take to grow back in fuller again???

I can't answer the question of how long it will take to grow back, but the Furminator should only be used on dogs that shed. The company advises against using it on poodles, and dogs with curly or wooly, poodle-like coats. It will tear the fur. Here is the info from the company:

The FURminator shed-less treatment is designed to be performed on "shedding" dogs. All dogs shed, but the extent and hair growth varies by the breed. With some breeds the "shed hair" falls off very easily, and others, it remains in the topcoat. With dogs considered "non-shedding" breeds like Poodles, most all of the "shed hair" will remain in the coat and if not brushed will become tangled and matted. The FURminator shed-less treatment should NOT be performed on breeds like a Poodle. Shedding breeds of dogs (including Terriers) are best candidates for the FURminator shed-less treatment.
Karen, from looking at Nikki's profile page it looks as though her pup is 3/4 retriever and 1/4 poodle...so very likely sheds.

Nikki, I would switch to a more gentle brush like the Chris Christensen Pin Brush ... works great and very gentle (the pins are not scratchy at all): http://doodlekisses.com/forum2/topics/2065244:Topic:20087

Should only take a few weeks to grow back to full length...depending upon how much was stripped off/cut off.
Oops...should have looked at the puppy first! Oh, well, maybe the info will help someone else. Sorry!

Here's another good product for getting all the loose hair...a shedding or undercoat rake. Very effective & inexpensive. This is the one I use on Jackdoodle.

We love our rake!

Since Caeleach has shed most of her puppy coat and hasn't decided yet whether or not to be a poodle or a Lab, we just use a rubber toothed brush and she cleans up nicely, Seamus (S. Poodle) is a whole different story though.
i don't imagine it's harmful to remove as much hair as you want, but i don't know for sure.
i don't use the furminator at all...i have given up on caring about shedding...too many dogs, too little time. =)

Rosco is brushed regularly. Thule rarely. Cass (border collie) is slickered every few months...sometimes we use a shedding blade.
Thanks for the info. I read the small print on the package after I bought it. Big mistake.
Dooh! I've made the same mistake then. Barney's puppy coat is coming out all over, I can tell where he's been. I thought the Furminator would help. It wasn't cheap either.
How old is Barney? He is sooo cute.
He will be 10 months on Mar 3rd. He is still growing like a weed.
