Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We took our boys to the groomer yesterday, and poor Cirrus had to be shaved down to the quick. He had giant mats that were untreatable in other way. I believe (and hope) this is just due to the puppy to adult coat change. All that beautiful peaches and cream gone! I was just wondering how long the coat change process went for people. Nimbus never got mats like this. Cirrus had nothing but beautiful silky mat free hair up until about a month ago. We left his face hair long and his body is so skinny. It is truly a sight. I will try to post a picture later. He still is his sweet self though!

Poor guy!! we know how that is well :(
Karen, I'm so very sorry "Cirrus scalped!" No groomers want to take the time to remove mats from our dogs. I have missed a few mats in the past and the groomer has told me that these mats cannot be removed. These mats are right down to the skin and impossible to remove. Do not believe these groomers. If you are willing to spend the time and have the correct grooming tools you can remove any and all mats from your doodle. I have brought Sasha home from the groomers on at least two if not three separate occasions to remove mats I missed. Now I thoroughly run my hands through Sasha's hair and run a large comb through her hair to make sure there are no mats. Sometimes I even ask my husband to double check for me.

If you go to the following website, Beverley of Rutland Manor gives great instructions on how to groom your doodle whether it's for a labradoodle, golden doodle or any other type of long hair dog. I hope I'm not breaking the guidelines on this site by referring you to this website: http://rutlandmanor.com/ASD.grooming.htm

If you're still having problems or questions, please let me know and I can send you more instructions.
Karen, I'm really new to this site. However, if you go to groups there is a category under grooming with excellent instructions available for anyone's use.
I have to say my doodles are the worst at getting matts.. So much for Doodles being Foo Foo dogs.. mine are always outside in the muddd, running around.. and There crazy. My groomer, which is the breeder of my dogs gets matted up messes and she spends allll dayyy on them, with the right tools, and the matts are gone. The matts are all the way down to the skin when they go in, like the chest, belly and around the ears.. Just depends on if the groomers know how to groom doodles, and want to take the timeee and sweat.. As Maryaline says, run a brush through em every once in a while and try to keep them from getting bad :) take care!
