I have been walking Riley (13 weeks) everyday and the past few days he has started to pull me. I am not sure what the right response is to this. Should I just stop? or do I pop the leash and bring him back to me?
I was hoping on some tips of what works an what doesn't. Before this week he walked right next to me with a loose leash. I of course thought he was a "natural". Duh!
I took Lucca on a short walk last night without his harness, the Easy Walker. All he did was pull. I didn't realize how well it (the harness) worked until I didn't use it!!! It works. Plus it doesn't choke him if he does try to pull. Our walks are much more pleasant.
Yvonne, they covered this today at the puppy class.
We practiced luring the puppy to walk next to you by having a handfull of treat in your fist in front of the puppy's nose.
As you took few steps and lured the puppy to follow, we dispenced the treat little by little while saying "walk". And eventually increased the distance before the puppy can get the treat. ( I had treat in my left hand, Charlie to my left and held the leash with my right hand) It's just bad for your back! since you are bending over to get the treat in front of the puppy's nose.
I practiced a little after we got home, too. I guess it takes a lot of patience and practice on our part.
We practiced this today on the street and at the park.
I think the park was too distructing to Charlie. She would stay and walk by me as long as she can stay foced on the treat ( may be 30 yards), but there were too many other interesting things going on at the park! Eventually, I gave up because I got tired of bending over while walking.....

I tried all of these techniques when Joey was a small pup and they all worked well - until he turned 61/2 months-now I feel like I am starting over again. It's really frustrating. The gentle leader works well but I am trying to get him off of it since I don't want to use that thing forever. Plus, when he jumps up or pulls really hard to greet other dogs (which is something we are working on), I am afraid to do some damage to his neck... So, be really diligent about the loose leash walking!
