The reason my DH didn't want another dog is because - "Now we can finally come and go as we want and we'll have to worry about the dog." How did you all get passed that comment. I'm now getting the second dog and I'm still getting it. I've had Fergie for almost a year and it has not been a problem. I said - Honey I don't see you sweeping me off anywhere very often. What do you all do with dog when you're gone?
We have an RV and always take our dogs even to the beach for the day. We live in So. Cal (land of the mostly good weather) so we can have the dogs use a doggie door during the day. Excepting that Ned brings in sticks, rocks etc. we can come and go as we please.
We take our doodles with us alot, if we go to San Angelo to shop, we drop them off at Petsmart or PetCo for grooming, do what we need to do, then pick them up. When we go for a longer time, we drop them off at place that boards, they stay the day ($15 for 2 of them, 2 meals and 2 snacks) and my daughter or son in law picks them up if we are getting back after 6. Or they stay the night there for $25 for 2 of them. They must love it, because they get out of car, run up to the door then up to the door where kennels are and run to an emply kennel that has dogs on either side of it. We have taken them on a 2 day trip and stayed a week with my daughter. They do fine. Now we do want to go to Europe for about 2 wks, we have to decide who is taking care of the doodles. I use to hire someone to stay at the house, fill refrigerator and pay them $100 for aweek. Now we are in Texas and I haven't found some one that would do this. Maybe in the future.
Just recently 4th of July we took Wilson to Chicago for the day He was very good in fact he almost expects a car ride everyday he loves it Their was only one time we had to kennel him for a wedding this past June I was a very nervous Doodle mom but, he really loved, So We try to take him everywhere, this past week we were inDoor County and my oldest son was available to take care of Wilson. YEa!!!
We boarded Zeke & Lily for the first time this past weekend. It is a really nice facility, almost like a dog spa. Although it was only for 2 nights I missed them terribly and by their actions they really missed us too. They both were like velcro for the first few hours and have continued to be extra loving after 2 days being home. I'm confident they were well taken care of but it's nice to know they missed us as much as we did them.
Because we have such a menagerie (3 dogs and 2 cats) we have someone house/pet-sit for us. Typically this is one of our young friends that are still foot loose and fancy free. They are our daughters’ friends that have spent so much time at our house that they are really extended members of the family. The four-footed children already know them and are excited when they stay. And we can have a worry free trip knowing that everyone is not stressed out boarding somewhere. The only ‘excited’ moment we ever had was a few years ago when we forgot to tell our young friend that we were having sod laid down. We received a frantic call that someone was ‘stealing’ our front yard.
I am also having a house sitter watch my two while we take a few days to go away. I know how Lola is when boarded and thought she would be happier at home with Marlow!
I'm replying late, but I too got a sour look when I wanted to add a second doodle to the family. I hope that you've found that a 2 Dood house is less work (other than 8 muddy paws instead of 4 in the Spring) like I have. So no more sour looks in our house now that there's no more doodle second-wind at 9:00 PM on work nights! They wear each other out :) instead of wearing us out.
BTW, Your babies are adorable!
