How are doodles with babies???

My husband and I are thinking about starting to try and get pregnant and I was wondering if anyone has any tips, advice or thoughts about this? My baby dog is 7 months and is still jumpy, nippy, and def. has his moments of insanity. Anyone have experience bringing a baby into the family?? Brooks is really good with kids, but he does like to jump on them and lick the crap out of their face. I'm mostly concerned that he will accidently hurt a baby with his nails or by nipping, but I am not planning being pregnant for awhile (and then nine months of actually BEING prego) so I hope he grows up a little. Mostly looking for advice and support on this subject!!!!!!!!! I know there has got to be folks out there who brought home a baby with a DOOD!

I think most doodles are good with kids...but ESPECIALLY if they have experience with children and young children. There is always the exception but sounds like your pup is 'still a pup' and with training and maturity he will behave better. TRAINING will do more than 'maturing' as there are plenty of out of control 2 and 3 year old dogs out there...not mean or aggressive but just untrained.

So 1st...work hard on training, take classes all the way through the advanced level so you have verbal control over your dog.

2nd -- socialize him with children in controlled settings...make the experience GOOD for him so he thinks good thoughts about kids.

3rd...there's a good book about raising pups and kids...Ill have to look it up.

Most of all work on training.

And remember that NO dog should be trusted with a baby alone.... My 2 doodles are SUPER excited about babies and want to lick them to death. Thule even will 'paw' at a baby if she can't get to the baby (i.e. baby gate in the way). So with careful supervision and obedience training you should be FINE :)

I have a small one and the best advice I can give you is to make sure that after the baby comes that the dog gets plenty of exercise and attention. When Limerick doesnt get enough exercise he gets really playful with the baby. Also I agree not to ever leave the baby alone with the dog and make sure he is voice controlled. :)

When you come home from the hospital, come in put the baby down and greet the dog immediately. Have DH come home with a blanket that the baby had been wrapped in and give it to the dog to get the baby's scent. Introduce the dog to the baby and make sure the dog gets extra attention.

Hi Megan, I live in the metro Kansas City area and my trainer actually teaches a class at the hospital for expectant parents whose "first children" are dogs :) I do not know the curriculum, but I'll bet she would probably email you and debrief you on the techniques.
